Why Your Business Is Missing From Google's AI Answers: How Bauer Bodoni Finds the Block

If you are asking why my website is not showing in AI Overviews, the answer is usually one of seven practical problems. Most of them are fixable checks, not secret tricks. For better information and a better understanding of this topic, follow this blog: guide to ranking in AI Overviews. Work through the checks in order and you will usually find the block.

What are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are AI generated summaries at the top of search results. They answer a question and link to the websites used as sources. Google says its AI Overview reaches 2.5 billion users.

Ahrefs found AI Overviews appear for 26.8% of keywords in India, against 20.5% in the US. AI Overviews pull from the same index and ranking systems as normal Search.

Is your site switched off in Search Console?

Yes, one setting can switch your site off completely. As of 31 August 2026, Google rolled out a Search generative AI control in Search Console to all websites. It controls whether a site can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI features in Discover.

Go to Settings, then Search generative AI. The option called Include my site's links and content is the default for all properties. If someone changed it, your site will not appear in AI features at all.

Can Google index your page and show a snippet?

No page can appear if Google cannot index it or cannot show a snippet from it. A snippet is the short text Google shows under a result.

Run the page through the URL Inspection tool in Search Console, and request indexing if needed. Remove any noindex tag. Remove nosnippet, or a max-snippet limit that is too low. Also allow crawling in robots.txt, and at your CDN or hosting level. A CDN is the network that delivers your site files to visitors.

Does the search even trigger an AI Overview?

Often it does not, and that is not your fault. AI Overviews only appear when Google decides they add something to classic Search. Check by searching the question yourself.

Ahrefs found 21.4% of informational keywords trigger an AI Overview, against only 2.1% of transactional keywords. Ahrefs also found queries of 7 or more words trigger AI Overviews 46.4% of the time, against 9.5% for one word queries.

Does your page rank high enough?

Usually the page simply does not rank high enough. Your organic ranking is still the biggest single lever for AI citations. Growth Memo found a page at position 1 has a 58% chance of being cited, falling to 14% at position 10.

Ahrefs found 38% of AI Overview citations also rank in Google's top 10. Pages outside the top 10 still get cited, often through fan-out sub-queries.

Does your content say anything original?

If your page repeats what everyone else says, Google has no reason to pick it. Google contrasts commodity content, which repeats common knowledge, with non-commodity content, which offers first hand insight. Google says unique and useful content will likely influence AI search presence more than any other recommendation in its guide.

Surfer found AI Overview cited articles cover 62% more facts than articles that are not cited. Add your own results, numbers and real examples.

Could you simply have too few impressions yet?

Yes, and this one is about measurement, not visibility. The Generative AI performance report in Search Console will not appear for sites without enough AI feature impressions. A missing report does not always mean a missing presence.

The report is free and was rolled out to all websites on 31 August 2026. It shows impressions from AI features over time, which pages get the most and fewest impressions, and impressions by device and country. Track trends over weeks, because Ahrefs found AI Overview content changes 70% of the time for the same query.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my website not showing in AI Overviews?

Most sites are missing for one of seven reasons, from a Search Console exclusion to low rankings or repeated content. Check the setting, indexing and snippet rules first.

Is AI Overview optimisation different from SEO?

No. Google says AEO and GEO are simply SEO, because AI features rely on its core ranking systems.

How long does it take to appear in AI Overviews?

There is no fixed timeline. Google says even pages that meet every requirement are not guaranteed to be crawled, indexed or shown. A page that already ranks on page one can be cited quickly, while a new page on a new site usually needs months of SEO work first.

Can I check my AI Overview performance for free?

Yes. Use the Generative AI performance report in Search Console. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions by page, country and device.
