Do you have that sort of happening when you promise yourself that you will book your dental appointment, but never do so? And still you are procrastinating it. Let's be honest, do you remember how long it has been since that date?

And when the moment comes when you feel a slight ache in your tooth, and convince yourself to stop booking an appointment for a couple of days, and somehow those days convert to weeks, and gradually months. This is not because you are lazy, but because when you hear about a dental appointment, your mind instantly imagines a very clumsy kind of anxiety, and something like a feeling that you can feel but are unable to explain in words.

For many people, this hesitation is not just about the treatment itself, but it's also about the awkward machine sound, thinking about the clinic environment, or simply a fear of discomfort. Because of this, a simple routine checkup can also feel like a hard row to hoe.

But here is something to think about: as every sector is developing and renovating its technology, there should be something that can solve the problem for those who are afraid of dental appointments. What if visiting the dentist feels comfortable from the very start? Imagine what it would be like if one could handle the whole thing with complete relaxation without any anxiety.

And yes! Modern dentistry now pays attention not only to the treatments but also to the comfort of patients as well. One of which is Dental Sedation. It is a way to help patients feel calm and comfortable during dental exams and procedures.

Hearing the term "dental sedation" does not mean you will be fully unconscious or asleep. Most of the time, you will stay awake, but you will feel calm, less stressed, and much more comfortable than usual.

Now that you know the name of this procedure and have a basic understanding of what it is, you likely want to know the practical details: How is it done? How long does the process take? And what kind of aftercare is required?

So, let's find out.

Before starting the treatment, the dentist will review your medical history, your anxiety levels, and determine your specific treatment requirements. Based on this evaluation, they will decide which type of sedation is most appropriate for you, whether in the form of a tablet, a mild gas, or medication to be done in a controlled manner during the procedure.

The next question concerns the duration of the process: if the sedation is mild (such as laughing gas), its effects disappear very quickly. However, if you have received sedation via a tablet or intravenously (IV), its effects will gradually reduce after a few hours.

The overall process is quite straightforward; however, you will need to bring a companion along to assist you after your treatment, as I previously mentioned…the effects of the sedation can persist for several hours in some cases. You may also be advised to rest for a few days and to avoid performing demanding tasks for a short period.

Ultimately, the specific aftercare instructions will depend largely on the type and dosage of the sedative medication used during your treatment.

And I am able to explain this to you in a comprehensive way because I have experienced this before. A few months ago, I had to remove my wisdom tooth, and I was procrastinating for a long period of time, but now it has started to irritate me more than I could have imagined. And when I consulted this to my dentist, Dr. Neha at McCcallum Dental. That is when she introduced me to this procedure. I have done the removal treatment, and seriously, it’s like a blessing in dental treatments.

And yes, if someone is also procrastinating like me, they should consult their dentist and complete their treatment without worrying about pain and any other anxiety.
