What is the easiest way to divide whole numbers?

If the final subtraction is not zero, the leftover number is the remainder and it must be smaller than the divisor. A remainder of 3 in a division by 7 can be written as 3/7 or as a decimal if the question calls for one. To continue with decimals, place a decimal point in the quotient, add a zero to the remainder, and keep repeating. Never put a decimal point in the answer merely because the dividend has ended; first decide whether a remainder is acceptable.

Estimation is a useful error check. Since 847 is close to 840 and 7 divides 840 to make 120, an answer near 121 is sensible.
