A statue representation of the Javanese mythical couple of the rice goddess Dewi Sri and her husband Raden Sadono, the ‘Loro Blonyo’ is a mainstay in many homes in Central Java, Indonesia.
The literal translation of ‘Loro Blonyo’ means ‘two together’, usually occupying a place of prominence in the entry room of many homes. It is believed to be a symbol of various virtues and blessings, e.g. abundance of rice and household blessings. For a married couple, it promises marital bliss and procreative fertility, and in any case, it symbolizes healthy longevity for the home’s occupants. Over generations, though, the ‘Loro Blonyo’ symbolism of love, harmony, spiritual balance, and prosperity has lost none of its salience.
From the royal courts of ancient Java to the colonial ages of imperialism, the ‘Loro Blonyo’ has undergone refinement and distinction in its craftsmanship across various societies in the region, so much so that no two finished pieces from different villages are identical. Each village and subculture in the Java region produces different and unique craftwork. Here at Pondok Loro Blonyo, with the direction of our creative team, we produce our own signatures.
A recognized symbol of status, the ‘Loro Blonyo’ is more often found in the residences of the well-to-do. Quality and attention to detail are paid to specially commissioned and bespoke pieces. In fact, some of the highly praised versions of the pair can be found in the palaces of the region today.
