What Is EDTA Manganiz? Properties, Grades and Uses in Micronutrient Fertilizers

EDTA Manganiz is the manganese salt disodium of EDTA, which is a water-soluble chelate allowing manganese to be bio-available for plants despite adverse soil chemistry. It is included in formulations for foliar sprays, fertigation solutions, and dry micronutrient mixtures. Some catalogues spell it "Manganiz", but the compound is Mn-EDTA, CAS 15375-84-5, and that is what an EDTA Manganiz manufacturer will ship you.

Why manganese needs a chelate in the first place

Manganese is a difficult nutrient. Under alkaline conditions or where there is high pH of the soil, it oxidizes and becomes unavailable to the crop resulting in interveinal chlorosis. The plant requires this nutrient for purposes of photosynthesis, metabolism of nitrogen, and activation of enzymes.

EDTA forms an envelope around the metal ion. The manganese will be soluble and able to enter the plant either by its root or leaf surface.

Where it gets used, and where it struggles

This is where Mn-EDTA gets its niche. Soil application is a risky option. It is based on general chelate chemistry and not on a particular spec sheet, since iron, copper, and zinc chelate more tightly to EDTA than manganese, meaning that they will displace the manganese in soil that is abundant with those elements. In case a client wants to broadcast it, conduct a field test first.

Anyone who has cleaned a clogged drip filter on a Monday morning knows why solubility matters more than price per kilo. A cheap lot that leaves sediment costs far more in downtime.

How to vet an EDTA Manganiz manufacturer before the first order

Start with paperwork. A serious EDTA Manganiz manufacturer sends the COA and MSDS without being chased, and the numbers on them should match the specification you were quoted.

Then ask about consistency. One good batch proves little. You need to know how the plant regulates the degree of chelation as well as manganese levels because the formula for your blends relies on it.

Next comes packaging. Chelates tend to attract moisture, which will make the powder cake up.

HDPE bags or drums that seal properly are the minimum.

Even an EDTA Manganiz supplier that deals but does not manufacture may come in handy. However, when a consignment goes wrong, you would like to have someone who can track the problem back to the reactor and not to the warehouse. If you are exporting, you need to confirm that the EDTA Manganiz exporter takes care of documentation and labeling of your destination country.
