Voice-Over Services: Types, Costs & How to Find the Right Studio (2026)

Author : Pratham Singh | Published On : 31 Oct 2026

You’ve created your film, web series, or YouTube video (after three weeks of editing)! It’s now time to bring it to life with a voice-over or translate it into a language they don’t understand.

Voice-over services will make your new audience forget they’re watching a translated piece of content. Whereas if you get it wrong, they’ll likely just scroll past!

This guide will walk you through what voice-over services include, what the main types are, what will affect the cost, and when AI will be suitable. We’ve also included tips on how to brief your studio to ensure you get an accurate quote. This guide is ideal for production houses, film/web series producers, and creators who may be translating their first video or their two hundredth episode.

What are voice-over services?

Simply put, voice-over is adding any recorded voices to your video/audio. This could be a narrator for a documentary, a character in a cartoon, or someone providing the audio in Hindi for an English YouTube video.

Professional voice-over services will consist of:

  • Scripting: The script will be adapted to sound natural in the new language, matching the timing in the video.

  • Casting: Finding voices that fit your characters and audience.

  • Direction: A director will oversee each line during recording.

  • Editing & Mixing: Any unwanted noise will be removed, and voices will be mixed with music and sound effects.

  • Quality: Sync, script, and technical checks.

  • Delivery: Files will be provided in the exact format requested.

  • If they’re only providing the recording aspect of the service, you’ll be left with all the other steps to do.

Types of Voice-Over Services

Voice-over services vary depending on the type of performance required. Choosing the right type will depend on what your audience will be doing whilst watching.

Sometimes, professional voice-over artists won’t be able to provide the right performance. For example, although they may sound amazing in a car advert, they may struggle to keep a steady voice for a cartoon character over 52 episodes. Similarly, a calm documentary narrator may sound bland in a fast-paced YouTube video.

Ask your studio to provide examples in your genre. Generic showreels won’t tell you much.

Voice-Over vs. Dubbing vs. Lip-Sync vs. Subtitles What do I need?

Often, people will use these terms interchangeably. However, they are completely different and will impact your budget.

They have to read. This can be harder on phones and for children.

For example, when Baahubali & RRR were released for Hindi audiences, they were not subtitled. They were lip-sync dubbed. This meant people in Delhi/Lucknow watched it like a Hindi film, and they became a national hit.

As a rule of thumb, if there are faces talking in your video and you’d like your audience to forget they’re watching something that’s been made elsewhere, then go for lip-sync dubbing. If there is just one voice explaining what is going on, then voice-over is sufficient.

Voice-over Services for Production Houses, Film Producers & YouTubers

Production Houses

You’ll likely need a lot of voice-over services. Whether it’s 10 episodes this month or 40 next month, you’ll need the same voices.

The main considerations are

Consistent cast: If the lead character’s voice changes in episode 12, people will notice.

Platform Requirements: Every OTT & micro drama app will have requirements for loudness, format, and music/effects tracks. If you don’t meet these requirements, then your episode will be rejected.

Security: Unreleased episodes can be valuable, so your vendor should treat them as such.

Dashverse, who run several micro drama apps, mentioned to us that what they value most is our ability to provide high volumes without affecting quality. This is usually the deciding factor for production houses. For more information on dubbing services for OTT platforms, read our full guide.

Film/Web Series Producers

Casting is key. You want your dubbed voice to have the same presence as the original actor.

Big Indian releases are now being released in Hindi/Tamil/Telugu/Kannada/Malayalam. This means planning dubbing from day one. Our guides on voice casting for dubbed films and pan-India releases in 5 languages go into more detail.

Voiceover & Dubbing for Animation Series in India

Voiceover & Dubbing for animation series in India can be tricky. Characters will have voices for years, rather than weeks. Children will quickly notice if the voice has changed. Songs also need to be rewritten to ensure they rhyme and fit the tune.

Voice consistency is taken very seriously at the top of the industry. Mayumi Tanaka has been voicing Luffy in the Japanese version of One Piece since 1999. The producers kept her, as her voice is what the fans love. Read why voice consistency is important.

This is also the case with Indian children’s content. Sukudo Studios is the Hindi localization partner for The Soul Publishing children’s and family channels, including 123 GO! Hindi (11 million subs). One of these channels has exceeded 7 billion views in India. This is only possible as the same voice artists are used for each character.

If you’re looking to localize an anime or long running cartoon, read our guides on dubbing anime in Hindi, Tamil & Telugu and keeping voices consistent in 200 episodes.

If you have an animation series, send us one episode, and we’ll cast 2 voices for your characters.

Influencers & YouTube Creators

YouTube now allows multiple audio tracks. This means your audience can select their preferred language in their settings. All your views, likes, and comments will go to one channel.

MrBeast was one of the first big creators to use multiple languages, and many large channels have followed suit. With over 550 million Hindi speakers, it’s a huge market for Indian creators.

Choose voice artists that match your energy. If you’re fast-paced and joke around, then a slow, formal voice will lose your audience quickly. Read our guide on setting up multiple languages on YouTube.

How much do voice-over services cost?

There isn’t a set cost. Anyone who gives you a set cost without seeing your project are just guessing.

On IndiaMART you can see prices ranging from around ₹599 per minute for corporate narration to ₹15,000 per minute for specialist accents. This is a huge difference in price, and there are a few reasons why:

Language: Common languages like Hindi will be cheaper, as there will be lots of voice artists available. Rare languages will be more expensive. Length: Most studios charge per finished minute. If there are multiple characters speaking, then this will be more expensive. For example, if there are 10 characters in a cartoon, then this will be more expensive than just one narrator. Lip-sync will also be more expensive due to the amount of script work and studio time.

Content: If it’s going to be shown on TV, in cinema, or in paid ads, then this will be more expensive than a regular YouTube upload. If you’re on a tight deadline, then this will be more expensive, as more people will be working at the same time. Translation & Scripting Sometimes this will be charged separately.

Before comparing prices, make sure you know what is included. Is translation included? Is mixing included? Are there quality checks? Are there revisions? Often cheap prices for just the recording will end up costing more, as you’ll have to pay someone else.

Human, AI, or hybrid voice-over? How to decide in 2026?

AI voices have improved massively but will only be suitable for certain tasks.

AI is a good option for:

Internal Training Videos: Only for staff to watch.

Rough drafts: To get timing right.

Large amounts of simple, neutral narration.

However, human voice artists will be better for:

Dramatic & Emotional scenes: Pauses and cracks in the voice will add to the scene.

Comedy: Timing is key.

Children’s characters: Warm and playful.

Lip sync: Every line needs to match the mouth movement.

Brand Ads: The voice becomes part of how people will remember you.

Most serious studios will use a hybrid approach. AI will be used for the initial translation and timing. Then a professional voice-over artist will perform the final lines. Everything will be checked by a human team. This means you get some of the speed of AI without the boring robotic voice. We use this method thanks to our partnership with Sarvam AI.

Whatever option you choose, make sure to ask any studio:

Have the voice artists signed agreements on how they’ll use their voices? Will they use your unreleased content to train AI tools?

We go into more detail on AI dubbing vs. human dubbing in 2026.

Voice-over process step-by-step

Knowing the process will help you identify where things could go wrong and what to ask.

Brief & Quote: You provide the video, languages, and deadline. The studio will provide a price and timeframe.

Scripting: The translators will adapt the script to sound natural and fit the scene. For example, a 3-second line in English may be 5 seconds in Tamil, so it will need to be rewritten.

Casting: The studio will suggest some voice artists for your characters. Once approved, they’ll begin recording.

Recording: A director will be present for every session. They will oversee the tone and ensure every line matches the picture.

Editing: Any breathing, clicking, or mistakes will be removed. Every word will be timed to match the video.

Mixing: The voices will be mixed with music and sound effects. The volume will be set to match the requirements of each platform. YouTube, OTT apps, and cinemas all have different requirements.

Quality: A separate team will check the timing, script, tone, and technical requirements.

Delivery: You’ll receive your final files in the format requested.

Take a screenshot of this list and ensure every shortlisted studio meets the criteria.

Native Speakers: Every language you’re targeting should be voiced by native speakers. Non-native speakers will be easily identifiable by their accent.

Genre Examples: If you’re producing micro dramas, ask for examples in micro dramas. If you’re producing cartoons, ask for examples in cartoons.

Content Security: If you’re dubbing unreleased films/series, look for TPN-certified studios. TPN (Trusted Partner Network) is a security program supported by the Motion Picture Association. They audit how secure your vendor is with your content. Sukudo Studios has the TPN Blue Shield badge.

In-House: Ask who is actually doing the work. Studios who outsource will lose control over quality and deadlines.

Clear Quality Checks: Ask what is checked, who is checking, and how many revisions are included.

Realistic Turnaround: The turnaround should match your release date and allow for one round of fixes.

Experience: If they’ve delivered to YouTube, Netflix, or micro drama apps, they’ll know what they’re rejecting.

Written Rights: Your contract should state who owns the recordings and where they can be used.

For more information on what to ask when choosing a dubbing studio, read our long guide. What to Send a Studio for an Accurate Quote

Send the following information in your initial email and you’ll usually receive a solid quote.

Video/Audio file or link. Total length.

When you contact a studio, share the original language and every language you need, along with the script or transcript and the type of service required, whether that’s narration, dubbing, or lip-sync. Mention how many characters speak and any voice preferences, such as age, gender, and tone. Tell them where the content will be published and for how long, plus your deadline and the file format you need. Don’t have a script? Don’t worry. Most studios can transcribe the original for you, though it usually adds a day or two.
