Hyderabad has become one of South India's busiest hubs for civil services preparation, and the institute you pick can shape the next two to three years of your life. With dozens of options around Ashok Nagar and RTC Cross Road, the real question is not which name is loudest, but which institute fits the way you learn. This guide gives you a practical checklist and shows how Major Oberoi Academy measures up against it. UPSC Coaching in Hyderabad | Complete Guide 2026
What the Best IAS Institute Should Offer
A good IAS institute does far more than finish the syllabus. Look for these essentials before you pay any fee:
-
Integrated Prelims and Mains coverage, so you never study the same topic twice.
-
Regular answer-writing practice with personal feedback, not just model answers.
-
Current affairs that are linked to the static syllabus.
-
Mock tests and performance tracking that expose weak areas early.
-
Mentorship that keeps you consistent across a long preparation cycle.
Why Mentorship Matters More Than Lectures
Most aspirants do not struggle because of missing material. They struggle with planning, consistency and answer quality. At Major Oberoi Academy, founder Major S.P.S. Oberoi brings a defence-services background and more than 15 years of mentoring UPSC, State PSC and defence aspirants. Every student is tracked individually, so the strategy is adjusted as preparation moves forward instead of staying fixed on day one.
Courses at Major Oberoi Academy
The UPSC GS Prelims-cum-Mains Foundation Course suits beginners who want full syllabus coverage, current affairs and answer writing inside one plan. Aspirants who already have a base can opt for the UPSC Long-Term Mentorship Programme, which offers personalised, one-on-one strategy and evaluation. Those aiming at state services can also choose TGPSC or APPSC Group-1 and Group-2 coaching under the same roof.
How to Decide Before You Join
Attend a demo class, ask how many students each mentor handles, find out how answer copies are evaluated, and speak to current students. Public feedback also helps; Major Oberoi Academy displays a 4.9 rating from student reviews on Google. Compare institutes on these points, not on advertising claims or result banners you cannot verify.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not choose an institute only because a friend recommended it, do not pay the full fee before attending a demo class, and do not keep switching institutes every few months. Consistency with one well-structured programme beats hopping between several. Remember that no institute can guarantee selection. What a good one can do is give you direction, regular practice and honest feedback so that every hour of effort counts.

Q. Is coaching necessary to clear the IAS exam?
Coaching is not mandatory, but a structured programme saves time, gives a study plan and provides feedback on answer writing, which is hard to get through self-study alone.
Q. How long should I prepare before attempting the UPSC exam?
Most freshers need 12 to 18 months of focused preparation. A foundation course followed by mentorship and test practice is a common route.
Q. Can I get a free counselling session before joining?
