The Sustainability Argument, Argued Both Ways

The case against

Synthetic turf is a petrochemical product. Manufacturing polyethylene fibres, a polypropylene or polyurethane backing and the associated infill carries an embodied carbon cost that a bag of grass seed does not. A lawn sequesters a modest amount of carbon in soil and root mass; a synthetic surface sequesters none.

It also removes habitat. Soil under a synthetic surface still supports microbial life, but the surface itself supports no invertebrates, feeds no birds and hosts no pollinators. Widespread replacement of urban lawns and gardens with any hard surface contributes to the urban heat island effect and to the loss of small habitat patches that urban wildlife depends on.

End of life is the weakest point. A worn synthetic surface is a mixed-material product that is difficult to recycle, and in practice a large proportion of it goes to landfill. Recycling capability is improving but is not yet routine, and buyers should not assume it.

The case for

The comparison that matters is not turf versus wilderness. It is turf versus the intensively managed lawn it replaces. Over a fifteen-year service life, a synthetic lawn avoids: the water used for irrigation through fifteen summers, the fuel burned by around 350 mowing sessions, the synthetic fertiliser applied 30–45 times, and the herbicides and mossicides that would otherwise wash into stormwater.

Nitrogen runoff from urban lawns is a measurable contributor to nutrient loading in waterways. Two-stroke mowers are disproportionate emitters relative to their engine size. And in the many locations where grass never establishes properly — deep shade, heavy clay, steep banks — the realistic alternative is not a healthy lawn but bare compacted mud that erodes into the drain.

Where that leaves a homeowner

Three factors decide which way the ledger falls. Service life is the biggest: a surface that lasts fifteen years amortises its embodied carbon over fifteen years of avoided mowing and watering, while one that fails in four does not. This makes quality and base preparation an environmental question, not just a durability one. Area matters: surfacing a 40 square metre courtyard is a very different decision from surfacing a 400 square metre section. And what you do with the rest matters most of all.

The strongest position, environmentally and practically, is the hybrid one. Surface only the flat area that genuinely has to stay usable, choose a durable product with a long UV warranty made for local conditions, insist on base preparation that will make it last, and give the remaining space to natives, fruit trees and pollinator planting.
