The Real Sleepaway Camp Packing List (From Moms Who've Done This 100 Times)

Let me guess…
You've got the camp's official packing list in front of you.
It says "8 t-shirts" and you're staring at your kid's drawer like… which ones?
Or it says "trunk" but doesn't tell you what KIND. Or what size. Or where to even start.
Take a breath.
After 20+ years of helping camp families, here's the REAL packing list — the one that actually works.
Start Here: The Foundation
Before you pack a single sock, you need 3 things:
→ A great camp trunk → A solid duffle for overflow → A labeled laundry bag
Everything builds from here.
Mom tip: Pre-pack the trunk for the FIRST day on top. Your camper opens the trunk and grabs their bunk setup immediately. No digging.
Bedding (The Bunk Setup)
This is non-negotiable.
→ 2 fitted sheets (twin or twin-XL, check with your camp!) → 2 top sheets → 2 pillowcases → 1 camp comforter → 1 sleeping pillow + backup case → 1 bedrest pillow (HIGHLY recommended) → 1 boyfriend pillow → 2–3 decorative pillows → 1 throw blanket
A coordinated sleepaway camp bedding set saves you SO much stress here.
Clothing for a 4-Week Session
The honest quantities (size up for 7-week sessions):
→ 10–12 t-shirts → 5–6 tank tops → 7–8 pairs of shorts → 2–3 sweatpants → 2–3 leggings → 3 sweatshirts or hoodies → 1 light jacket → 14+ pairs of socks → 14+ pairs of underwear → 3–4 sports bras (if applicable) → 4 sets of pajamas → 3 swimsuits → 1 nicer outfit for visiting day → 1 rain jacket
Pack 2–3 custom camp shirts mixed in for special days.
Footwear (Pack More Than You Think)
→ 2 pairs of sneakers → 1 pair of water shoes → 2 pairs of flip-flops (1 shower, 1 daily) → 1 pair of hiking shoes (if needed) → 1 pair of cleats (if sports) → 1 pair of slip-ons for the cabin
Pack these in shoe bags for camp to keep the trunk clean.
Toiletries
→ Shampoo + conditioner → Body wash → Face wash → Toothbrush + toothpaste → Deodorant (2 — you WILL run out) → Hair brush + accessories → Sunscreen (2–3 bottles) → Bug spray (2 bottles) → Lip balm with SPF → Hand sanitizer → Tissues → Prescription meds (in original containers, given to nurse) → Feminine products (if applicable) → Contact supplies + glasses case
Store it all in a quality shower caddy with drainage.
In the Bunk Essentials
→ Flashlight + extra batteries → Headlamp (game changer) → Water bottle → Stationery + pre-stamped envelopes → Journal → Books (2–3) → Card games → Small clip-on fan (cabins get HOT) → Cute bunk decor (banners, lights, photos)
NO electronics (banned at almost every camp).
Outdoor Gear
→ Camp chair (personalized!) → Beach towel + bath towels → Sun hat → Sunglasses with strap → Small backpack for activities → Reusable water bottle
The chair is one of the most-used items at camp. Don't skip.
Organization MVPs
These small accessories make daily camp life work:
→ Quality shower caddy for camp → 2 laundry bags (one in use, one rotating) → 2+ shoe bags → Sock bag → Bunk caddy → Toiletry overflow bag → Packing cubes inside the trunk
Sentimental Items
The little things matter:
→ A family photo (taped inside the trunk lid) → A favorite stuffed animal (yes, even older campers) → Pre-written letters from home → A note from you tucked into the pillow
These are the homesickness fighters.
What NOT to Pack
❌ Electronics (phones, tablets, smart watches) ❌ Cash beyond what camp specifies ❌ Expensive jewelry ❌ Anything that can't get dirty ❌ Outside food (most camps ban) ❌ Designer clothes ❌ Aerosol sprays (fire safety) ❌ Hand-wash-only fabrics
When in doubt → email the camp.
The Labeling Step (DON'T SKIP)
Real talk:
Without labels, half your camper's stuff disappears.
Label:
✔️ Every clothing item ✔️ Every shoe ✔️ Every toiletry ✔️ Towels and bedding ✔️ Water bottles ✔️ Flashlight ✔️ The laundry bag (most important!)
Use iron-on labels, sew-in labels, OR waterproof equipment labels.
Mom pro tip: Tape a copy of your packing list inside the trunk lid. Your camper uses it to pack up at the end of camp = nothing left behind.
Packing Order (The Trunk Strategy)
Pack from bottom to top:
1. Bottom: Shoes (in bags), toiletry overflow, books, heavy items
2. Middle: Folded clothes (rolled, in packing cubes)
3. Top: Bedding for the FIRST night, shower caddy, flashlight
4. Lid pocket: Letters from home, family photo, packing list
This way → camper arrives, opens trunk, has everything they need for night 1 right on top.
When Should You Order Your Camp Gear?
Earlier than you think.
→ January–February: New collections drop. Best selection. → March: Order trunks + custom items. Plenty of production time. → April: Last chance for personalization without rush fees. → May: Panic territory. Custom orders may not arrive in time. → June: Sold out. Stressed. Rush fees. Don't be a June parent.
We typically launch new styles in winter, which is honestly the best time to shop.
The First-Day Setup
Want your camper to feel READY on day 1?
Pre-pack a small "first day" bag inside the trunk:
→ Pajamas → Toothbrush + toothpaste → Flashlight → A note from you → Their stuffed animal → The bedrest pillow
This single bag = everything they need to settle in before fully unpacking.
The Bottom Line
A great camp packing list isn't about MORE stuff.
It's about the RIGHT stuff:
→ A trunk that lasts → Bedding that's cozy → Clothes that survive laundry → Accessories that make daily life smooth → Sentimental touches that fight homesickness → Everything LABELED
Do the work upfront. Save yourself the August panic.
And when your camper steps off that bus at the end of the session — sun-tanned, friendship bracelets up to her elbow, holding a tie-dye she made on craft day —
You'll know it was all worth it.
Welcome to the best summer ever.
