10 Common Golf Cart Problems and How to Fix Them

Golf carts are reliable workhorses on the course, in communities, and across commercial sites — but like any vehicle, they develop issues over time. Knowing the most common problems and their fixes can save downtime, reduce repair costs, and keep your fleet running smoothly

1. Dead or Weak Batteries

A dead battery is the single most frequent cause of “no-start” or slow performance in electric carts. It often results from leaving lights/ golf cart accessories on, infrequent charging, or aged cells.

Fix: Fully charge the battery with a golf cart specific charger. Clean corroded terminals, tighten cable connections, and test pack voltage with a multimeter. If voltage drops sharply under load or the battery won’t hold charge, replace the battery or the weakest cell in the pack.

2. Cart Won’t Start (Electric or Gas)

Electric carts may fail to start due to a faulty key switch, solenoid, or run/tow switch set to “Tow.” Gas carts often have spark, fuel, or starter battery issues.

Fix (Electric): Confirm the run/tow switch is in “Run,” check the main fuse, inspect battery cables, and listen for a solenoid click. Replace the key switch or solenoid if needed.

Fix (Gas): Check the starter Golf cart battery, inspect spark plugs and ignition coils, and ensure fuel lines and the carburetor are clean and unobstructed.

3. Slow or Sluggish Performance

If the cart struggles on hills or feels underpowered, common culprits are weak batteries, corroded cables, a failing solenoid, or (in gas carts) clogged air filters and old spark plugs.

Fix: Replace worn batteries and cables, install a reliable solenoid, and service the engine (air filter, spark plugs, fuel system). For electric carts, verify controller settings and throttle sensor operation.

4. Jerky Acceleration or Deceleration

Jerky motion usually points to a faulty solenoid, speed controller, or loose electrical connections. 
Fix: Tighten and clean all high-current connections. Test and, if needed, replace the solenoid or speed controller. On modern carts, a throttle position sensor (TPS) or MCOR may need adjustment or replacement.

5. Brakes Squeaking, Dragging, or Weak Stopping

Squeal often means glazed or worn brake pads/shoes; dragging can come from over-adjusted linkages; weak stopping usually indicates worn pads or contaminated drums.

Fix: Replace worn or uneven brake shoes/pads, install new springs and hardware, and clean or resurface glazed drums. Adjust brake linkage so wheels spin freely when released and stop straight under firm braking.

6. Steering Feels Loose or Wanders

Loose steering typically results from worn tie-rod ends, bushings, or a worn steering box — especially on lifted carts or high-mileage units.

Fix: Replace old tie rods and steering bushings, and upgrade steering components if the cart is lifted. After replacement, check alignment and tire pressure to prevent uneven wear.

7. Uneven or Rapid Tire Wear

Uneven wear is commonly caused by incorrect tire pressure, misalignment, or worn wheel bearings.

Fix: Check and adjust buggy tire pressure regularly, align wheels after steering repairs, and replace worn wheel bearings. Inspect suspension components if wear patterns persist.

8. Overheating (Gas Carts)

High engine temperature often traces to a clogged radiator, low coolant, or a failing thermostat/water pump.

Fix: Clean debris from the radiator, top up coolant, and flush the cooling system. If overheating continues, replace the thermostat or water pump and inspect hoses for leaks or collapse.

9. Lights Not Working or Flickering

Lighting faults usually stem from blown fuses, bad switches, or incorrect voltage on accessory circuits.

Fix: Replace blown fuses and faulty switches. Install a voltage reducer if running 12V lights on a higher-voltage pack, and verify all grounds are clean and tight.

10. Faulty Fuel System (Gas Carts)

Poor performance or no-start on gas carts can be caused by a clogged fuel filter, dirty carburetor, or a failing fuel pump.

Fix: Replace the fuel filter, clean or rebuild the carburetor, and test fuel pressure. Replace the fuel pump if it cannot deliver steady flow.

Keeping a simple troubleshooting checklist — batteries, connections, charger, solenoid, brakes, tires, and fuel/spark — will resolve most issues quickly and keep your golf carts dependable day after day.
