Thailand Visa Rules for Indians: Visa Exemption, e-Visa and Documents

Author : Mayuresh M | Published On : 22 Oct 2026

Thailand visa rules for Indians depend on the traveller’s passport type, purpose of travel and planned length of stay. Indian ordinary passport holders are currently eligible for visa-exempt entry to Thailand for up to 30 days for tourism and short-term business engagements, effective from 15 September 2026 until further notice. Check the Royal Thai Embassy’s visa guidance.

Travellers planning a longer stay, employment, study, formal business activity or another non-exempt purpose should apply for the appropriate Thai visa before travel. Thailand uses an online e-Visa system for eligible visa applications. Use Thailand’s official e-Visa portal.

Do Indians need a visa for Thailand?

For eligible short visits, Indian ordinary passport holders do not currently need a visa for Thailand. The visa-exemption scheme allows stays of up to 30 days for tourism and short-term business engagements. Read the official visa-exemption update.

However, visa-free entry does not mean that every type of activity is permitted. It is not a substitute for the correct immigration status for employment, long-term study, long-term residence or other activities requiring a specific visa category.

Apply for a Thai e-Visa if:

  • You intend to stay for more than 30 days.

  • Your purpose does not fit tourism or a short-term business engagement.

  • You are travelling for work or employment.

  • You are enrolling in a course or undertaking formal education.

  • You need a visa category such as Non-Immigrant B, ED, O or DTV.

Thailand tourist e-Visa requirements for Indians

The official Thailand e-Visa platform lists core documents for a Tourist e-Visa application. Requirements can vary based on the applicant’s circumstances and the responsible Thai mission.

Prepare:

  • Passport biodata page.

  • Recent colour photograph, generally taken within the previous six months.

  • Proof of current location or legal residence.

  • Flight or travel booking confirmation.

  • Accommodation proof, such as hotel confirmations or a host invitation.

  • Financial evidence, such as recent bank statements.

  • Any additional documents requested through the online application.

The Thailand e-Visa portal identifies financial evidence of at least 20,000 THB for a tourist visa application. A recent bank statement or an eligible sponsorship document may be used, subject to the reviewing authority’s assessment. See official tourist visa document requirements.

How to apply for a Thailand e-Visa from India

Thailand visa applications are submitted through the official e-Visa platform for applicable categories.

1. Confirm whether a visa is required

First, determine whether your trip fits the 30-day visa-exemption scheme. If your intended stay is longer or your purpose is not covered, choose the suitable visa category.

2. Start the online application

Create an account on the official Thailand e-Visa application website. Do not rely on unofficial lookalike websites or old application procedures.

3. Select the correct visa category

Choose Tourist TR for eligible tourism visits. Select a Non-Immigrant or other visa category only when it matches the actual purpose of your trip.

4. Complete the form carefully

Enter your name, passport number, address, itinerary and travel purpose exactly as supported by your documents. A mismatch between the passport, hotel booking, flight details and application form can cause delays or document requests.

5. Upload supporting documents

Use clear, complete scans. Check that every upload opens correctly and contains all pages. If your bank statement, invitation letter or booking has multiple pages, avoid uploading only the first page.

6. Pay the official visa fee

Pay the amount shown for your selected visa category. Visa fees can differ by visa type, entry type and location of application.

7. Monitor your email and application account

The reviewing authority may request additional documents, corrections or clarification. Respond only through the official instructions linked to your application.

Thailand visa fees for Indians

Visa-exempt travellers do not pay a visa fee for their eligible 30-day visit. Applicants who need an e-Visa should check the official fee shown for their visa category during the application process.

The Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi lists visa fees separately by category and entry type. For example, a Tourist TR single-entry visa has been listed at ₹3,000, while other categories, including Non-Immigrant visas and multiple-entry visas, have different fees. View the official visa-fee table.

Before payment, confirm:

  • Visa category and number of entries.

  • Whether the quoted amount is an official visa fee or includes an external service charge.

  • Whether the fee is refundable if the application is refused or withdrawn.

  • Whether additional charges apply for payment processing.

Visa validity, entries and stay period

These three terms mean different things:

  • Visa validity: The period in which you may use the visa to enter Thailand.

  • Number of entries: The number of times the visa may be used to seek entry.

  • Period of stay: The maximum time permitted in Thailand on each entry.

For example, a tourist visa may be valid for a period before travel, but the permitted stay is assessed when entering Thailand. Check the entry stamp and conditions issued by immigration after arrival.

What to carry when travelling visa-free

A visa exemption does not remove the need to satisfy immigration officers at the border. Carry documents that demonstrate a genuine short visit:

  • Valid passport in good condition.

  • Return or onward flight booking.

  • Hotel reservation or Thai host’s address and contact details.

  • Travel itinerary.

  • Evidence of adequate funds.

  • Business invitation or meeting details, if travelling for a short business engagement.

Keep digital and printed copies available. Immigration officers may ask questions about the purpose, duration, funding and accommodation for your visit.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming visa exemption permits employment in Thailand.

  • Booking non-refundable travel before checking the appropriate visa route.

  • Applying for a tourist visa when the actual purpose is work or formal study.

  • Uploading unclear scans or incomplete bank statements.

  • Giving conflicting travel dates across flights, accommodation and application forms.

  • Treating visa approval as a guarantee of entry.
