- Run Screaming Frog → export all page titles → sort alphabetically and look for exact duplicates.

Problem 7: Hreflang Errors on Multilingual Sites
If you run a site in multiple languages or regions, hreflang is probably broken somewhere. Wrong hreflang doesn’t fail silently — it causes the wrong language version to rank in the wrong country, and most site owners only notice when traffic from a specific region drops unexpectedly.

Problem 8: Broken or Redirected Pages in Your XML Sitemap
Your sitemap should be a clean list of pages you want indexed. In practice, most sitemaps are a graveyard of redirected URLs, noindexed pages, and 404s that piled up quietly after site changes. Google ignores them — but it also wastes crawl time getting there, and it signals that nobody’s maintaining the site.
How to diagnose it?
- Download your sitemap XML file directly (usually at /sitemap.xml or /sitemap_index.xml).
- Run it through Screaming Frog: File → Import Sitemap → crawl all URLs.
- Filter for status codes other than 200, and separately filter for pages with noindex meta tags. Both counts should be zero.
How to fix it?
- Remove all non-200 URLs from your sitemap immediately. Redirects especially — if a URL redirects, only the final destination URL belongs in the sitemap.
- Set up a monthly audit reminder. Sitemaps go stale fast after redesigns, content pruning, or CMS migrations.
- If you’re on WordPress, verify that Yoast or Rank Math is actively excluding noindexed pages from the sitemap. This setting sometimes gets toggled off during plugin updates.
