Switzerland Visa for Indians: How to Apply, Fees, Documents and Processing Time (2026)
Switzerland is one of the most popular destinations for Indian travellers, with Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and the Swiss Alps high on many lists. The visa itself is a standard Schengen visa, but Switzerland has its own embassy, its own portal and its own expectations on documents.
This guide explains how the Switzerland visa works for Indians, who processes it, what it costs, what you need and how long it takes. Fees, centres and rules change, and sources do not always agree, so confirm the current details with the Swiss authorities and VFS Global before you apply.
Do Indians need a visa for Switzerland?
Yes. Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, though it is not in the EU. Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) to visit. It allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area. There is no visa on arrival and no e-visa for Indians.
If you want to work, study or stay longer, you need a different permit, which is outside the scope of this guide.
Which Schengen country should you apply to?
You apply to the country where you will spend the most days. If you are visiting several Schengen countries and Switzerland is your main destination, apply to Switzerland. If the stays are equal, apply to the country where you enter first. If Switzerland is only one stop on a longer trip, check whether another country is the better place to apply.
Where do you apply?
Switzerland’s visa applications in India are handled by VFS Global on behalf of the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi, which makes the decision. Several sources say the application form is completed on the official Swiss visa portal, swiss-visa.ch, and the biometric appointment is booked with VFS. You can also find general information on the Swiss Embassy in India and the State Secretariat for Migration, and appointments are booked on the VFS Global Switzerland page for India.
Sources differ on how many VFS centres there are, with figures of 8 and 11 cities. One guide says the centre you choose does not affect processing time or outcome. Check the VFS page for the list of centres and for the one nearest to you.

How much does a Switzerland visa cost?
|
Item |
Reported amount |
|
Schengen visa fee, adult |
€90, which is about ₹8,200 to ₹9,900 depending on the exchange rate |
|
Schengen visa fee, child aged 6 to 11 or 12 |
€45, with sources giving slightly different age bands |
|
Child under 6 |
Free |
|
VFS service fee |
Sources differ: about ₹1,750 to ₹2,200 in some guides, about ₹1,850 in one, and about ₹2,690 in several |
|
Estimated total per adult |
Roughly ₹11,000 to ₹15,000, according to one agency |
The Schengen fee was raised from €80 to €90 in June 2024. A few sources still quote €80, which is out of date. The visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused, and the VFS charge is non-refundable. Confirm the current VFS amount when you book. Also budget for insurance, document preparation and any optional services.
How long does it take?
Several sources report a standard processing time of 10 to 15 working days, counted from when your application reaches the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi. Applications submitted at VFS centres outside New Delhi may take an extra two to three working days for courier transit. Peak seasons, such as summer, can stretch this to 30 days or more, and complex cases can take longer. Apply at least six weeks before your flight, and earlier for summer travel.
What happens at the biometric appointment?
You give your fingerprints and a photo at the VFS centre. One guide notes that fingerprints and facial scans are required for the new digital border record from April 2026. Once your biometrics are in the visa system, they are generally reused for later applications, within the rules. At the border, you will also be registered in the EU’s entry system.
