Discovering that your Telegram account has been hacked is a frightening experience, especially when you use Telegram to talk with your family, manage your business, or store important information. However, you must not panic because Telegram has built special recovery systems that can help you get your account back even if the hacker has changed your phone number, your password, or your recovery email. The most important thing to remember is that time works against you in this situation because the hacker may be messaging your contacts asking for money or spreading false information. Every minute you wait gives the hacker more time to damage your reputation and your relationships. You must begin the recovery process immediately, and the steps below will guide you through exactly what to do, even if you do not speak perfect English and even if you have never faced a hacking situation before. The process may take anywhere from a few minutes to a few days depending on how much information the hacker has changed, but most people can recover their account within twenty four hours if they follow these steps carefully and provide all the correct information to Telegram's support team.
The very first action you must take after realizing your account has been hacked is to open the Telegram app on your phone or computer. If the hacker has not yet changed your password or your login code, you may still be logged into the app on your device. Look at the top of your screen and check if your profile name and photo still appear as you left them. If you can still access your account, you have won half the battle already because you can change your security settings before the hacker locks you out completely. Go immediately to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Active Sessions or Devices. You will see a list of all phones, computers, and tablets that are currently logged into your Telegram account. Look for any device that you do not recognize. It might show a phone model you have never owned, a city you have never visited, or a computer operating system you do not use. For each unrecognized device, tap on it and then tap Terminate or End Session. This will instantly log the hacker out of your account on that device. After terminating all unknown sessions, change your two step verification password immediately by going to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Two Step Verification, and then tap Change Password. Create a new strong password that the hacker cannot guess. Finally, change your recovery email address to an email that only you control. These three actions take less than two minutes but will usually stop the hack completely and return full control to you.
If you try to open Telegram and find that you are completely logged out and cannot get back in, then the hacker has changed your password or your phone number. Do not lose hope because Telegram still has ways to help you. The next step is to try logging in using your phone number as usual. Open Telegram and tap Start Messaging or Continue. Enter your mobile phone number exactly as you did when you first created your account. Telegram will say that it is sending a confirmation code to your Telegram app, but since you are logged out, you will not receive that code. After a few seconds, Telegram will show you a message that says something like Did not receive the code or Having trouble. You must look for a small link that says Log in using a password or Forgot password. This link is sometimes hidden, so you may need to look carefully at the bottom of the screen. When you tap that link, Telegram will ask you to enter your two step verification password. If the hacker has changed your password, you will not be able to log in this way either. In that case, look for another link that says Forgot password or Reset password. Tap that link, and Telegram will send a password reset link to the recovery email address you set up when you created your two step verification. If you still have access to that email account, go to your email inbox, find the message from Telegram, and click the reset link. You will then be able to create a new password and log back into your account. Once inside, follow the same steps mentioned earlier to terminate unknown devices and secure your account again.
Many people from non-English countries forget to set up a recovery email address when they first create their Telegram account, or they set up an email address that they no longer use. If you find yourself in this situation where the hacker has changed your password and you have no recovery email, you must contact Telegram's human support team directly. This is the slowest but most reliable method for recovering a hacked account. To contact Telegram support, open any web browser on your phone or computer and go to the website telegram.org. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page and look for a link that says Support. Tap or click that link. You will be taken to a page where you can describe your problem to Telegram's support team. You must write your message in very simple English so that the support team can understand you even if English is not your first language. Write something like this example: My name is your full name. My phone number is your full phone number including your country code. My Telegram account was hacked on date. The hacker changed my password and my recovery email. I cannot log into my account. Please help me recover my account. I can prove that this phone number belongs to me. After writing your message, you must also attach a photo of your SIM card or a screenshot from your mobile network provider that shows your name and your phone number together. This proof is very important because Telegram needs to confirm that you are the real owner of the phone number. Without this proof, they cannot help you because anyone could claim any phone number. After sending your message, you must wait patiently. Telegram support usually replies within twenty four to forty eight hours. When they reply, they will send instructions to your email address or they will send a special recovery code to your phone via SMS text message. Follow their instructions exactly, and you will most likely get your account back.
While you are waiting for Telegram support to reply, you must take action to protect your contacts and your reputation. The hacker may already be sending messages to your friends, family members, and business customers pretending to be you. These messages often ask for money, ask for personal information, or share fake links that lead to more hacking attempts. You should immediately contact the most important people in your life using another method like WhatsApp, a phone call, a text message, or even a visit in person. Tell them clearly that your Telegram account has been hacked and that they should not reply to any messages coming from your Telegram account until you tell them it is safe again. Ask them to report your hacked account to Telegram by opening their own Telegram app, finding your account in their contacts, tapping on your name, scrolling down, and tapping Report. Reporting your account helps Telegram recognize that something is wrong and may speed up the recovery process. You should also ask your contacts not to click any links sent from your account and not to send any money or personal information no matter how urgent the message sounds. Hackers often create fake emergencies like saying you are in the hospital and need money immediately. Your contacts need to know that these messages are lies from the hacker.
If the hacker has changed the phone number associated with your Telegram account, the recovery process becomes more complicated but still possible. When a hacker changes your phone number, your old phone number is no longer connected to any Telegram account. This means you cannot use the normal login process at all because Telegram will say there is no account associated with your number. In this situation, you must use the Forgot password or Account recovery option that does not rely on your phone number. Open the Telegram app, enter your old phone number, and when Telegram asks for the confirmation code, tap the link that says Having trouble or Did not receive the code. Then tap the link that says Recover account using email. If you set up a recovery email address before the hack, Telegram will send a recovery link to that email. Click that link and follow the instructions to restore your phone number to the account and create a new password. After you regain access, go immediately to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Active Sessions or Devices. Terminate every single session you see, including sessions that look familiar. Then change your two step verification password to something new and strong. Finally, go to Settings, then tap on Phone Number, and make sure your correct phone number is listed. If the hacker added their own phone number as a secondary number, remove it immediately by tapping on it and selecting Remove.
Many people who lose their Telegram account to a hacker also lose access to their Telegram contacts list, their chat history, and their saved messages. Unfortunately, Telegram stores most of this information on its servers, not on your phone. If the hacker deletes your messages or blocks your contacts, you may not be able to recover that specific information. However, once you regain access to your account, any messages that the hacker did not delete will still be there. Your contacts list will still show the people you have chatted with before, unless the hacker manually removed them. Your saved messages folder, which is a special chat with yourself where you store important notes and links, may still be intact if the hacker did not delete it. After recovery, you should immediately go through your chat list and look for any conversations that you do not recognize. If the hacker used your account to talk with other people, those conversations will appear in your chat list. You can read them to understand what the hacker did. You should also send a message to all your important contacts explaining that you have recovered your account and that any previous messages from the hacked period were not written by you. Apologize for any confusion or harm the hacker may have caused, and thank your contacts for their patience and understanding.
After successfully recovering your hacked Telegram account, you must take strong steps to ensure that the same hacker cannot break in again. The most common reason accounts get hacked is that people use weak passwords or reuse the same password on multiple websites. If the hacker obtained your password from another website where you used the same email and password combination, they simply tried that same combination on Telegram and it worked. To prevent this, you must create a completely new and unique two step verification password that you have never used anywhere else. A strong password should be at least twelve characters long and should include a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use your name, your birthday, your phone number, or any word that can be found in a dictionary. A good example would be something like GreenTree$42Mountain but you should make up your own that is easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. You should also change your recovery email address to an email account that has a very strong password and two factor authentication enabled. Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo all offer free two factor authentication where you must enter a code from your phone in addition to your password. Enable this feature on your email account so that even if a hacker steals your email password, they cannot access your email without also having your phone.
Another powerful protection against future hacks is to enable Telegram's login code feature which requires you to enter a separate four digit code every time you open the Telegram app on a new device. This feature is different from your two step verification password. The login code is stored only on your phone and is not sent over the internet. To enable this, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Passcode Lock. Turn on the option that says Lock with Passcode and create a four digit or six digit number that only you know. Then turn on the option that says Auto Lock and set it to one minute. This means that if someone steals your phone while it is unlocked, they still cannot open your Telegram app without entering the passcode. Even if they remove your SIM card and put it into another phone, they cannot access your Telegram because the passcode is stored on the original phone's internal memory, not on the SIM card. This feature has stopped countless hacking attempts because most hackers expect to simply open the Telegram app after stealing your phone number. When they are met with a passcode request that they cannot bypass, they give up and move to an easier target.
You should also review all the devices that are currently logged into your Telegram account at least once every week for the first month after recovery, and then once every month after that. To do this, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Active Sessions or Devices. You will see a list showing every phone, computer, tablet, and web browser that has access to your Telegram account. For each device, you will see the model name, the operating system, the approximate location, and the last time it was active. If you see any device that you do not recognize, tap on it and tap Terminate immediately. If you see a device that you recognize but no longer use, such as an old phone you sold or gave away, terminate that session as well. If you see a web browser session that says Telegram Web and you do not remember logging into Telegram on a computer browser, terminate it immediately because that could be a hacker accessing your account through a hidden browser window. Keeping your active sessions list clean and small is one of the best habits for long term account security. Many people never check this list and are shocked to discover that their account has been logged into from five or six different devices that they did not authorize.
If you use Telegram for business, recovering from a hack requires additional steps beyond securing your personal account. You must inform your customers that your account was hacked and that any messages they received during the hack period were not from you. Send a broadcast message to all your customers explaining what happened and apologizing for any confusion. If the hacker sent fake payment requests to your customers, you must clearly state that those payment requests are fraudulent and that customers should not send money to any address or number provided by the hacker. You may also need to contact your local police if the hacker stole money from you or from your customers. Save screenshots of all suspicious conversations and any messages from the hacker. These screenshots will be useful as evidence. You should also change all your business passwords including your email password, your banking passwords, and any other online accounts that use the same or similar passwords as your Telegram account. Hackers often try the same password on many different services, so securing only Telegram is not enough. After you have fully recovered and secured your account, consider applying for Telegram verification if you have not already done so. Verified business accounts receive additional protection against hacks and false reports, making it much harder for hackers to take control in the future.
For people who have tried all the steps above and still cannot recover their hacked Telegram account, there is one final option which is to create a completely new account with the same phone number. Telegram allows you to create a new account using a phone number that was previously associated with a hacked or deleted account. To do this, simply uninstall Telegram from your phone, reinstall it from the official app store, and start the registration process as if you were a new user. Enter your phone number, and Telegram will send a confirmation code via SMS text message to that number. Enter the code and create a new account with a new name and new profile photo. However, you must understand that this new account will have none of your old contacts, none of your old chat history, and none of your old groups or channels. You will need to rebuild everything from zero. You should also send a message to all your important contacts using another method like WhatsApp or a phone call, explaining that your old account could not be recovered and that they should delete it from their Telegram contacts and add your new account instead. This option is painful and time consuming, but it is better than having no Telegram account at all. Before choosing this option, make absolutely sure that you have exhausted every other recovery method because once you create a new account, your old account becomes permanently inaccessible and all its data is lost forever.
The emotional toll of losing a Telegram account to a hacker is often worse than the practical problems. You may feel violated, angry, embarrassed, or afraid. These feelings are completely normal and many people experience them after a hack. Give yourself permission to feel these emotions, but do not let them stop you from taking action. Remember that hackers are professionals who target thousands of people every day. Being hacked does not mean you are stupid or careless. Even very smart and careful people get hacked because hackers are constantly finding new tricks and new weaknesses. What matters most is how you respond after the hack. By following the steps in this guide, you are showing that you are strong and capable of protecting yourself. After you recover your account, take some time to learn more about online security. Watch simple videos on YouTube in your own language about how to create strong passwords, how to recognize phishing messages, and how to enable two factor authentication on all your important accounts. Each small step you take makes you a harder target for hackers. Eventually, hackers will stop trying to break into your accounts because they will realize that you are too difficult to trick and too well protected. Your recovered and strengthened account will stand as proof that you are not a victim but a survivor who learned from the experience and came back stronger than before.
