Leading energy developer SSE (through its renewables and distributed energy divisions) has confirmed the strategic acquisition of three solar developments across the UK, featuring potential for co-located Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The acquisitions align with SSE’s ongoing commitment to expanding its multi-gigawatt pipeline of flexible, low-carbon infrastructure to support national net-zero targets and enhance grid stability.

1. Project Scope and Capacity Breakdown

  • Solar PV Generation: The acquired sites represent a combined target capacity designed to deliver clean energy directly to distribution networks and major power consumers.

  • Co-Located Battery Integration: Each site includes provisions for co-located BESS infrastructure, enabling excess solar generation to be stored during peak sunshine hours and dispatched when grid demand spikes.

  • Flexible Development: Adding battery storage alongside solar arrays optimizes land usage, shares grid interconnection points, and minimizes grid balancing costs.

2. Supporting System Flexibility and Decarbonization

  • Grid Balancing: As more intermittent renewables join the national energy mix, co-located solar-plus-storage assets provide rapid frequency regulation and voltage control services.

  • Commercial Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs): SSE plans to leverage these distributed solar and storage assets to offer long-term corporate PPAs to business customers seeking reliable, green energy supplies.

3. Expanding SSE's Clean Energy Footprint

The transaction builds on SSE’s broader investment strategy, which includes an extensive pipeline of solar and battery storage projects in development and under construction across the UK and Ireland. By combining utility-scale solar arrays with flexible battery systems, SSE continues to accelerate the transition away from fossil-fuel baseline generation.
