The SSC Stenographer (SSC Steno) Exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit candidates for the posts of Stenographer Grade C and Grade D in various ministries, departments, and organizations of the Government of India. Understanding the SSC STENO Syllabus is essential for candidates who want to prepare effectively for the exam. The recruitment process mainly consists of two stages: a Computer Based Examination (CBE) and a Skill Test in stenography. After qualifying for the written examination, candidates must appear for the Skill Test in stenography. This test is conducted to assess the candidate’s ability to take dictation in shorthand and then transcribe it on a computer. For the post of Stenographer Grade C, candidates are usually given dictation at a speed of about 100 words per minute, while for Stenographer Grade D the speed is generally around 80 words per minute. Candidates must transcribe the dictation within the specified time limit using a computer. The transcription time may vary depending on the language chosen, such as English or Hindi.

The skill test is qualifying in nature, which means candidates must meet the required standard to move forward in the selection process. Although marks from the skill test are not added to the final merit list, failing to qualify in this stage will result in disqualification from the recruitment process. Therefore, candidates should practice shorthand regularly and improve their typing speed to perform well in the skill test.
