Sri Lanka Visa Process for Indians from First Check to Final Exit

The Sri Lanka visa process is simple on paper, but it has several stages, and confusion often comes from outdated posts and social media claims. For most Indian travellers the process runs through the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system operated by the Department of Immigration and Emigration. The official ETA portal is where applications are made, and the department explains the visa categories on its website.
Sri Lanka has changed its rules several times, so confirm each stage on the official sources before you travel.

Stage one, confirm that you need an ETA
Some posts claimed that Indians no longer need a visa or ETA to enter Sri Lanka, and a fact-check described how a notice on a High Commission social media page caused confusion. According to that fact-check, a Sri Lankan official said it is mandatory for Indian citizens to obtain the ETA, but no fee is charged, and that from 15 October 2025 an ETA became mandatory for foreign nationals eligible for free tourist visas. A Sri Lankan mission page also says that visitors should obtain ETA approval before their visit. Treat the ETA as required, and check the portal for any change.

Stage three, prepare your details and documents
-
Passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date, according to Sri Lankan mission pages
-

-
Travel dates, flight details and a return or onward ticket
-
Accommodation address in Sri Lanka
-
A working email address
-
For business travel, an invitation or company letter, as your category requires
Stage four, apply
Online route. Type eta.gov.lk into your browser, choose your category and fill in the form with details exactly as printed in your passport. Submit it and keep the acknowledgement. Sri Lankan missions warn that only the official ETA website should be used, because third-party sites charge large amounts.
Mission route. If you cannot apply online, or you need a longer stay, you can apply through a Sri Lankan mission. Published guides name the High Commission in New Delhi and consulates in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, and say business ETAs are often handled that way. Check each office's website for its current services, hours and fees before you go.
Stage five, wait for approval and save it
Published guides say tourist approval often arrives within 24 to 72 hours, and Sri Lankan mission pages describe a two to four business day window for some visa types. There is no guaranteed time, so apply at least a week before you travel. When the approval arrives, check your name, passport number and dates, then print it and keep a digital copy.
Stage six, travel and arrive
-
Carry your passport, ETA approval, return ticket and accommodation details
-
Expect your airline to check your authorisation at check-in
-
Be ready for questions at immigration, since approval does not guarantee entry
-
Remember that a Sri Lankan mission says a limited facility to obtain an ETA exists at Colombo airport for last-minute travellers, but the department says payments should be made on the official site only, so treat the airport as a fallback
Stage seven, manage your stay and extensions
The free tourist ETA allows 30 days from the date of first arrival with double entry, and on a second entry only the balance of the 30 days is granted, according to a Sri Lankan mission page. To stay longer, apply for an extension with the Department of Immigration and Emigration, either in person in Colombo or through its e-services portal, and pay the applicable fee. Apply before your 30 days end, and keep proof of payment.
Stage eight, leave on time
Leave within your permitted stay, or hold a valid extension. Overstaying can lead to fines and trouble with future visits. Keep your approval, receipts and any extension papers until you have left.
