Resin Driveways in Enfield: Is the Hype Actually Worth It?

Walk down almost any street in Enfield right now and you'll spot at least one driveway that looks like it's been poured from a single seamless sheet of stone. No joints, no weeds pushing through cracks, no puddles sitting after rain. That's resin-bound paving, and over the last few years it's gone from a niche choice to one of the most requested driveway finishes we install.

But "trendy" and "right for your house" aren't always the same thing. Here's what we've learned after installing resin driveways across North London, the genuine advantages, the trade-offs nobody mentions in the glossy brochures, and how it actually stacks up against block paving and tarmac.

What resin-bound paving actually is

Resin-bound surfacing is a mix of natural aggregate stone bonded with a clear UV-stable resin, trowelled on-site over a solid sub-base (usually permeable macadam or concrete). Unlike resin-bonded surfacing, where loose stone is scattered over wet resin and can shed grit for months, resin-bound is fully mixed before laying, so the stones are locked in and the surface stays smooth underfoot.

Where it genuinely wins

Drainage. Resin-bound is a SUDS-compliant (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) surface, meaning water passes through it rather than pooling or running off into the street. In areas of Enfield where planning departments are increasingly strict about non-permeable front gardens, this matters: it can be the difference between getting your driveway application approved without a fuss and getting bogged down in surface water management conditions.

No weeds, no moss, minimal maintenance. Because there are no joints for seeds to settle into, resin driveways stay cleaner for longer than block paving. An occasional pressure wash is usually all it needs.

Kerb appeal. The finish is genuinely striking, a smooth, contemporary look that block paving and tarmac can't replicate. For period Enfield homes with a modern refresh in mind, or new-builds going for a clean minimalist front, it's often the standout choice.

Where it's not the automatic answer

Cost. Resin-bound typically costs more upfront than tarmac and can sit above or around mid-to-premium block paving, depending on aggregate choice. If budget is the primary driver, it's worth having an honest conversation before falling in love with the finish.

Sub-base matters enormously. A resin driveway is only as good as what's underneath it. Cutting corners on the sub-base is the single biggest cause of cracking, and it's the main reason we'd always push back on very cheap quotes: the resin layer itself is thin; the strength comes from proper preparation beneath it.

Not ideal for very heavy vehicle use. Resin-bound handles standard domestic traffic well, but for driveways regularly taking heavier vehicles, block paving or tarmac with a reinforced base is usually the more durable long-term choice.

If drainage compliance, low maintenance and a modern finish matter most to you, resin-bound is very hard to beat, provided it's installed on a properly prepared sub-base by someone who won't cut that corner. If you're working to a tighter budget or expect heavy vehicle traffic, tarmac or block paving may serve you better long-term.
