Preparing Your Baby for an Abdominal Ultrasound: What Parents Should Know

Taking a baby for a medical appointment can feel challenging, especially when it involves an unfamiliar examination. Parents may have questions about how the scan works, whether their child will feel uncomfortable, and what they need to bring.

An abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging examination used to look at structures inside the baby's tummy. It uses sound waves to create images and does not involve ionising radiation.

During the appointment, a sonographer applies a small amount of gel to the baby's abdomen. A handheld probe is then moved across the skin to capture images of the area being examined. Your baby may need to change position or remain still for short periods so the sonographer can obtain the required views.

The examination is generally well tolerated. However, some babies may become unsettled because of the unfamiliar environment or the pressure of the probe. If your child's tummy is already tender, gentle pressure may also cause some discomfort.

There are a few simple ways parents can help make the appointment easier.

First, bring an item your baby recognises. A favourite toy, soft blanket, or familiar comfort object may help them feel more relaxed. Being close to your child during the scan can also provide reassurance. At Insight Diagnostic Imaging, parents are welcome to stay with their child during the examination.

It is also important to understand the preparation instructions before arriving. Some abdominal ultrasound examinations may require fasting, but the instructions can vary depending on the child's age and the type of scan.

For babies, feeding instructions are especially important. Parents should not assume that their child can have a normal feed immediately before the appointment. Instead, check the instructions provided by the clinic. If you are unsure whether breastfeeding or formula feeding is allowed beforehand, contact the imaging team for clarification.

Remember to bring the referral, Medicare card, and any other requested documents.

Being prepared can help reduce uncertainty and make the appointment more comfortable for both parents and babies. Knowing what will happen during the examination also makes it easier to support your child throughout the process.

If your doctor has recommended this examination, getting the correct preparation information is an important first step.
