The polymerization process uses catalysts like nickel or cobalt chloride to initiate addition reactions under controlled conditions.

Commercial production of Polybutadiene  utilizes solution or emulsion polymerization techniques. In solution polymerization, the catalyst and monomers are dissolved in an organic solvent before addition reactions take place. The emulsion method involves usage of surfactants to form water-soluble micelles around the monomers followed by initiation of polymerization reactions. Both the methods allow controlling parameters like temperature, pressure and catalyst feed to steer the polymer structure and properties.

After polymerization, the crude rubber is recovered and compounded through mechanical mixing with various additives to enhance specific attributes. Common additives include fillers like carbon black for reinforcement, antioxidants for increased aging resistance, plasticizers for flexibility and softeners. Sulfur or peroxides are added as curatives to promote vulcanization under heat and pressure. This yields the final vulcanized and crosslinked polybutadiene in the desired formulation for different end uses. Blended recipes containing synthetic polymers like SBR provide applications with unique benefit combinations.
