Lacrosse Returns to the Olympic Games for the First Time Since 1908

What do a hopeful Secret Service member, a junior in college, a government adviser, a professional men’s lacrosse player, and an aspiring attorney all have in common? They will be among a chosen group of players on a lacrosse field in Maryland this week, wanting to make their individual cases to be Olympians in 2028. Friday through Sunday, the Atlas Cup, a global event, will be held at USA Lacrosse home in Sparks.

Fans will get a view of sixes, the lacrosse style to be played at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Lacrosse is an official Olympic sport for the first time since the 1908 London Games. Current and former college athletes who might not have previously imagined being an Olympian now can. If you’re really ever given the chance to try to even go to the Olympics, you have to take it, said former Maryland lacrosse star Kori Edmondson.

She is also working to become a member of the Secret Service. My life’s lining up at this big time, said Anna Brandt, a former Hereford High School standout who’s studying for the LSAT. What a gift that is. So, I feel like I need to just go after it and put my best foot forward. This week, the United States’ sixes squads took part in their second fall practice session ahead of games against the men’s and women’s rosters from Canada, Ireland, and the Haudenosaunee Nationals this weekend.

Sixes Style Brings a Much Faster Pace and a Smaller Field to the Game

The Atlas Cup is the second of three global sixes matches this year. The last event is the Lexus Global Lacrosse Games in December in Springfield, Virginia. The initial event was the Pan-American Sixes Championships in Ontario, where both American teams pulled off one-point wins over Canada in October to take home gold medals.

Winning the contest and moving to the world championships next October automatically earned the United States the Olympics as the host country. Four more nations will earn their spots to the Olympics through the world championships. The sixth and last Olympic team will be chosen at a qualifying event in March 2028.

This week, the top lacrosse players in America shifted their plans to attend training. University of North Carolina junior midfielder Kate Levy, who went to McDonogh School, is missing three days of classes. Her teachers understand. You throw the famous word ‘Olympics’ in there, and they’re like, ‘Wow, that’s great!’ Levy said.

Players Shift Plans and Training to Chase an Olympic Dream in 2028

Many of the American Olympic hopefuls have good memories of watching the Olympics. Sydney Black, a former Patriot League Attacker of the Year at Loyola, said viewing Michael Phelps and the Fab Five gymnasts led by Gabby Douglass in 2012 started her wish to be a top athlete. Joey Spallina watched this year’s U.S.-Canada men’s hockey match with some of his Canadian friends.

Now he could have the chance to be on that same stage. Just to be in a spot where you can do that, go play at probably the peak of the sport, it’s amazing, said Spallina, who plays for the Premier Lacrosse League’s Maryland Whipsnakes and also manages lacrosse camps and clinics. The version of the game on view this weekend will look new compared to the field lacrosse style many are used to in NCAA play.

Sixes, made in 2018, features five players and a keeper, while college lacrosse features 10 players for men and 12 for women. The field for sixes is smaller. Games are four eight-minute parts, and the shot clock is just 30 seconds; in NCAA lacrosse, teams have an 80-second shot clock. Faceoffs happen only at the start of each quarter and overtime. After a score, goalies get the ball and make a quick pass to their teammates to start play.

Coaches Face Tough Roster Cuts as They Trim the Pool to Eleven Players

Many players compared it to casual basketball; the game is faster, with more fast breaks. Players are required to play both ends of the field. There’s less focus on positions. That means some have to make changes. For Spallina, that means getting the ball off his stick faster. For Black, an attacker, she’s been using defensive steps in her training. She thinks about transition defense and being one step ahead of her rival. Read more about Olympic Lacrosse Tickets.

Lindsey Munday, the women’s sixes coach and former USC lacrosse leader, said it is a new game and players and coaches have to be flexible, making changes and learning after each game. Andy Shay, the men’s sixes coach, agreed, adding it’s been a lot of trial and error for his team as they watch film and share ideas. He’s pleased with the progress they’ve made.

As for the new style, the Yale head coach is a fan. It’s kind of the cleanest version of the sport, in my view, Shay said. A lot of people don’t agree, and that’s okay. But I happen to really like it. And, speaking to these guys, they love playing it. In the coming months, both coaches will be faced with hard choices as they trim a skilled group of athletes to an 11-player roster. The players know that, too. They showed thanks for simply having an opportunity.

Team USA Locks Up a Host Spot While Other Nations Fight to Qualify

Their hope is that, by showing the game around the world, it’ll build more interest in the sport. Brandt went to high school 6 miles north of Team USA’s training spot and remembers when it was being built. She trains at the facility now. And she’s moved by how much the sport has grown. She and her family used to view the Olympics, switching between channels to see sports they’d never seen before.

It’s that exact thing that makes her happy to imagine how much the game could expand. It is really fun for the younger group, because now they’re in a place where lacrosse is on TV and they do see a path, Brandt said. It might be the first time someone’s viewing it, which is so key. That’s sometimes more key than gaining a fan who kind of knows what it is, just getting new eyes on it. I think the Olympics is the best spot to do that.
