Driven by increasing youth participation, NFL programs, and strong female participation, the sport’s rapid expansion in Mexico culminated in Olympic qualification for LA28, motivating future groups of players to dream larger than ever before.

Mexico Now Has One Million Players and a Strong New Generation Rising

But when she looks out on the field now, the Team Mexico quarterback no longer sees lively eight-year-olds, like the one she formerly was, competing against teenagers. Some children are still younger. All of them have someone their age and gender to play alongside.

With their long flags on their hips, almost touching the ground, jogging around, Flores said It’s the Olympics. It’s great to see how families are welcoming the game of flag football at a new level, since now people know that this is not a hobby anymore.

Flores has been playing flag football for 20 years, over 12 of these representing the national team. It is in these years that Mexico has seen the biggest growth in the sport. There are now an estimated one million flag football players in the country and many leagues aimed at different playing levels. The sport’s rising popularity has additionally given rise to the strongest flag football generation that Mexico has ever had.

Women’s Team Wins Bronze and Secures an Olympic Quota for LA28 Games

Ahead of the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in August, the national women’s team was ranked No.1 in the world. The men stood third-ranked, behind only seven-time world champions United States and three-time champions Austria. The women’s team left that tournament with a bronze medal and a quota for the Los Angeles Olympic 2028 Games.

Their male counterparts finished fourth and are listed among the favorites to secure one of the three leftover men’s quotas. The announcement on October 16, 2023, that flag football would make its Olympic debut at LA28 was a huge push for the game’s expansion in Mexico and beyond. Few are as thrilled about the prospects as sports pioneer Flores.

This is truly a new era for flag football, she told us. It’s not a backyard game today. It’s getting steadily more professional, and this is making it more available at various levels. Diana Flores started playing flag football in 2005, always without expecting to go to the Olympic Games. However, when asked what her younger self would think about Mexico qualifying to LA28, the 29-year-old had no trouble imagining that exact reaction.

From Dimly Lit Fields to Becoming Las 12 de Oro in National Pride

She would be jumping and laughing and just extremely proud and happy, Flores said after the team secured an Olympic quota in August. She would not believe that we made it this far, that now this is our reality and that we are going to have the opportunity to represent our country at the Olympics. This is simply something I never, never thought, when I was young, that could be a possibility.

Flores shared that joy with 11 teammates, many of them also joined the team long before flag football became an Olympic sport. Back then, there were no lofty goals. The Mexican women played for national pride and the pure enjoyment of it. Three world titles in 2004, 2008, and 2012 were a nice bonus, but it was not until 2022 that being a flag football player in Mexico took on a fresh meaning.

Mexico’s world titles came before the sport’s superpower. The United States entered the arena; their 39-6 victory over Mexico at the 2022 World Games made front-page headlines. The popularity of the sport grew in the country, as well as participation numbers and funds. Mexico defended their World Games title in 2025 by defeating the now three-time world champions, the USA, 26- 21 in the gold medal game.

Tochito NFL Programs Spark a Huge Surge in Youth and Female Players

They had risen in the national consciousness as Las 12 de Oro, a sharp contrast to their early days of playing on dimly lit fields without spectators or expectations, and without a lot of young players eager to join the squad. We didn’t have a clear route to follow. We were out on the field representing our country, wearing our jerseys simply for the pride of who we were. The pride of being Mexicans, and the passion for the game, Flores recalled. Read more about Olympic Football Tickets.

Now, through everything that we have gone through, we have been setting those standards. We have shown the world what can be done, what’s the way, what are the steps that you need to take to get to the highest level. Now, our girls know that there’s something larger to work for. There’s something bigger to dream about.

And that creates a huge, huge change for the next generations to come. Women have played flag football in Mexico since the 1970s, but it was strictly in the last 15 years that there was a particularly notable surge in participation. The spark came mostly thanks to the NFL launching Tochito NFL in the late 1990s. Youth tournaments, among other initiatives, were run in Mexico as part of the project.

Flores Says Flag Football Empowers Women to Be Loud and Fully Honest

The National Championship in January 2026 is a fine example of that amazing growth. More than 1,000 teams and 12,000 athletes joined in the five-day tournament with games played on 45 fields at once. As of 2025, women made up 40 per cent of all the flag football players in Mexico. Flores wants to see that percentage expand even further.

As someone who has found an outlet for self-expression in flag football, the quarterback knows firsthand how life-changing playing on a field with like-minded women can be. It’s surely empowering to have a football in your hands, Flores said. That you can be loud on the field, that you can be expressive on the field. That you can be everything you are, fully honest with a group of sisters that support you- that’s life-changing.
