The North West Pentathlon Hub and Hyndburn Council are paying for a new, lasting pentathlon obstacle course at Wilsons Playing Fields. Swapping out horse riding for the Olympic Athletics Tickets, this Ninja Warrior–style setup will offer local athletes entry to regional top-tier venues, letting them practice in all modern pentathlon events and boosting wider community involvement.

Steel-Framed Ninja Style Rig Will Fill 272 Square Metres of Infield

The project is run by the North West Pentathlon Hub. Volunteers have raised over £20,000 to buy specialist equipment and train coaches. Hyndburn Council is matching this funding to pay for groundworks, fencing and the building of an accessible path. The news follows the approval of plans for a permanent pentathlon obstacle training rig at Wilsons Playing Fields, inside the athletics track at the Whalley Road sports site run by Hyndburn Leisure.

The steel-framed setup will use a 272-square-metre area in the athletics infield and have a range of obstacles designed to test speed, agility, strength and skill. Right now, athletes in the North West have to travel hundreds of miles to Bath to use similar sites. The new obstacle course will grow the sporting choices now available at the recently opened Cath Thom Leisure Centre.

Athletes No Longer Need to Travel Hundreds of Miles to Bath to Train

These include swimming, athletics, fitness and outdoor sports spaces. Fans say the venue’s mix of facilities makes it well placed to support all parts of modern pentathlon and aid young athletes in moving up through local, regional and national performance routes. Modern pentathlon has seen major changes in past years, with horse riding dropped from the Olympic sport and swapped with obstacle courses.

Cath Thom Leisure Centre Gains Another Boost for Local Young Talent

It is an investment not only in sport, but in the future of our young people and our town. Deputy council leader Melissa Fisher said the project was a good fit for the vision for the Cath Thom Leisure Centre. She said this is a really exciting opportunity to give a pathway for local athletes to grow from grassroots play through to elite competition in the whole pentathlon. Dr Nic Robinson, lead coach at the North West Pentathlon Hub, said the obstacle rig would complete the club’s ability to coach athletes across all pentathlon events. The obstacle rig gives North West Pentathlon Hub the final training tool to train in all pentathlon sports events for both our current members and for making initiatives for new members.

Work Starts This Month as Hub Welcomes Beginners and Elite Athletes

This project has shown a blueprint of true partnership between Hyndburn Leisure Trust and Hyndburn Council in showing this amazing multi-sport facility and bringing more choices to our community as well as the wider sporting community. Hyndburn Leisure chief executive Lyndsey Sims said the group was proud to have helped make the project happen.

This new space strengthens our sporting choices even further and provides an exciting chance for athletes across the region to train to the highest levels here in Hyndburn, while also encouraging more young people to get active in sport and physical fitness. Work is expect to start later this month, with the North West Pentathlon Hub hoping to welcome both experienced athletes and beginners shortly after.
