PARIS, France – Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) could face growing legal and political pressure in France, including potential restrictions linked to his presence in the country and access to his Paris residence, as a French court moves forward with renewed scrutiny into the case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
A French investigative magistrate is set to examine complaints filed by international rights groups concerning the 2018 case involving Khashoggi, following years of legal wrangling over whether the matter could proceed in France.
The investigation will reportedly be handled by a judge from France’s specialized crimes against humanity unit after a Paris appeals court ruled in favor of allowing the complaint to move forward.
Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist known for his criticism of the Saudi government, died inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018, triggering global outrage and widespread calls for accountability.
Rights organizations, including DAWN, Trial International, and Reporters Without Borders (RSF), have pursued legal action in France, arguing that the case merits judicial examination under international legal principles.
French judicial authorities confirmed that the complaint, which includes allegations related to torture and enforced disappearance, will now be formally investigated after years of jurisdictional and admissibility disputes.
The development marks a significant legal step in the international effort to seek accountability in the Jamal Khashoggi case, which continues to draw global attention over issues of press freedom, dissident rights, and state responsibility.
Legal representatives for the rights groups described the ruling as a key moment in the pursuit of justice, saying the judicial investigation could further clarify facts and legal responsibility surrounding the case.
The reopening of the matter in France adds a new chapter to the international legal fallout surrounding the Saudi journalist’s case, keeping international attention focused on one of the most controversial incidents of recent years.
