Waste is no longer waste ! The people of Eloor panchayat are proving this by turning waste into manure and bio gas. People in the panchayat are making the most of source level bio waste management mechanism. An intensive awareness programme made this possible. The programme conducted by the gram panchayat helped people understand usage of source level treatment methods.

Source-level waste treatment

The Solid Waste Management Rules of 2016 aims at achieving 100 per cent source level treatment of biodegradables . The local self governments in various places have distributed equipment for source-level treatment. But people hardly used it properly in other panchayats. Eloor was also not different initially.

Biobin Bin

“Bio bin are to convert biodegradables to manure. After using it for a couple of months, majority of users complained about foul smell and presence of flees. They even scolded us. A proper educational campaign changed the situation,” said Anitha an Haritha Karma Sena Member in Eloor.

Guidance for managing waste

According to her, people ought to get a clear understanding about the usage of was converting items. Otherwise bio gas, bio composter bin and bio bins are likely to create headache for them. At the same instance, people can cut short their family budget just by making the most of these items. They can convert biodegradables most efficiently and effectively.

The statement of Dhanya, a resident of Eloor’ underscores this.” I started to use the bio bin since August 2023. After a couple of months I started to get high quality manure from it. The high quality manure is the secret of my fabulous kitchen garden. I just need to put the waste and inoculum in the biobin to make it ,” she said. She too proper guidance before using the biobin. She never faced the issues of flees and foul smell.

Meanwhile, Devasya, another resident of the pachayat, said he is effectively using the bio gas for the past couple of years.” I don’t have any waste at my home. Now, the waste is used cooking gas. I am saving the cost for LPG he said.”
