Border Security: Several countries globally deploy aerostats along land and maritime borders for wide-area surveillance using electro-optical, infrared and radar payloads. This helps interdict cross-border infiltration and criminal activities.

Disaster Response: Aerostats equipped with LTE or WiFi capabilities can provide temporary connectivity to affected populations in disaster zones where ground infrastructure has been damaged. They saw widespread use after Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Maria.

Communications Relay: Aerostats carry payloads like LTE antennas and amplifiers to extend cellular connectivity to remote inland and offshore areas. The US Navy operates the Persistent Ocean Surveillance system using aerostats.

Oil & Gas Pipeline Monitoring: Aerostat cameras can continuously patrol vulnerable pipeline routes for sabotage attempts or accidents.

Critical Infrastructure Protection: Aerostats above dams, power plants and other vital assets provide security against airspace threats.

Marine Research: Platforms like Saildrones deployed with aerostat payloads could revolutionize oceanographic data collection.
