Canada’s Lone Skateboarder Heads to the Youth Olympics in Senegal

Already thought to be one of the top skaters for her age in the world, a local teen’s stock is still rising. Evie Prichard, 14, will be the only Canadian skateboarder, male or female, skating at the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, starting Oct. 31, an event she’s hoping will aid her path to a potential Olympic Games spot on Team Canada at Los Angeles 2028.

Evie told NanaimoNewsNOW the growing exposure, attention, and travel schedule have not bothered her. She’s moved to 20th in the World Skateboarding Rankings for female street skaters. I just try to have fun with it, and I don’t wish to add too much pressure on myself because that’s when it gets worse a bit.

I just like to compete; so far, it’s been great, and I wish to keep doing these contests. The trip to Senegal will be Evie’s first without her parents, Miles and Vanessa, joining her, instead travelling with her coach to Amsterdam for a few days before going to West Africa. Once she returns to Canada, Evie will only have a short time at home before travelling back to Japan for a World Skate event, serving as an Olympic qualifier.

Teen Skater Keeps Her Focus on Fun Despite Rising Pressure Now

Last year’s event in Kitakyushu saw Evie get automatic entry onto the Canadian national team through a semi-final appearance, a result she’s hoping to beat this time. My first World Skate in Japan, it was just the neatest experience. It made me wish to go back to these contests because it was so neat, and I had a really good time skating against all these new people, getting to meet new people.

Going to these contests and getting to the Olympics is one of my main goals. But I’m still trying to focus on having fun and liking it. Watching Evie’s growth from the sidelines, her father Miles said she keeps going from strength to strength.

Olympic Qualifier in Japan Awaits After a Busy Travel Schedule

The experience of watching his daughter abroad in Senegal, from their Nanaimo home, will be a fresh one. I think you have to see the process through. As parents, I think you just sort of sit it out with them. These things sort of roll one into the next, and luckily, Evie has the aid of sponsors and organizations that are developing athletes that are helping her sort of get there.

Family and Sponsors Back Her Journey Toward the Olympic Stage

Miles said watching Evie grow as a skater over the last few years has given him a lot of trust in her ability to manage the next phase in her career. I actually feel that she knows what’s right for her. She’s actually pretty skilled at that kind of thing; she usually has an idea of how far she can push herself. It’s totally different than my own threshold for myself.

I would say that I’m not as brave, quite honestly, but I think she’s pretty careful. She’s got quite a planned approach to things. Of the 19 skaters ahead of Evie in the world rankings, only three are 14 years old or younger. The next highest-ranked Canadian female skater is 13-year-old Olivia Jang, from Oakville, ON, ranked 67th.
