Two days in Shimla and most of us are done with it. The Mall is packed, the car sits in a parking queue for half an hour, and you can’t take a photo on the Ridge without a stranger in it. So we drove up to Kufri. It’s about 16 km, maybe 40 minutes depending on traffic, and it felt like we’d crossed into a different state.

It’s colder up there, and a lot calmer. At 6 am the only sound is birds and the odd tea-stall owner setting up. If you come in January or February you might get snow. Might. Don’t build the whole trip around it, because some years it simply doesn’t show up.

What There Is to Do

Not much, to be honest. The Himalayan Nature Park takes an hour or two. A few viewpoints along the road are where every taxi stops, and you will stop too. Kids want the horse ride. Stalls sell maggi and momos, which taste far better in the cold than they probably deserve. If you need a proper restaurant or want to shop, Shimla is a short drive down.

Photos on booking sites only help so much. What you’ll care about at 10 pm is whether the room is warm, whether the road outside goes quiet, and how long the walk back is after dinner.
