Khatijabai of Karmali Terrace is a memorable QTP theatre production that explores family relationships, personal struggles, and the journey of a woman who becomes the centre of her family. Set within the Khoja community of Bombay, the play follows Khatija, an orphan who marries into the Karmali household and works hard to build her place in the family. Through her story, the production highlights the challenges of managing relationships, gaining respect, and finding a sense of purpose in life.
Khatija tries to secure her position in the family while dealing with conflicts with her in-laws and sister-in-law Shiraz. She also attempts to guide her eldest son, Aziz, and shape his future. Over time, she becomes a powerful matriarch who takes responsibility for everyone around her. However, despite her efforts and sacrifices, her later years bring an unexpected sense of loneliness and abandonment.
Based on Stella Kon’s Emily of Emerald Hill, the play is adapted and directed by Quasar Thakore Padamsee. Jayati Bhatia delivers a solo performance as Khatijabai, bringing the character’s strength, humour, emotions, and personal struggles to life. Through engaging storytelling, the production explores how family expectations, personal ambitions, and the desire for control can influence relationships.
The play first opened at the Prithvi Theatre Festival in November 2004 and runs for approximately 75 minutes without an interval. With its blend of humour and emotional moments, Khatijabai of Karmali Terrace encourages audiences to reflect on family bonds, the sacrifices people make for loved ones, and the importance of living with dignity. Its themes remain relatable to anyone who has experienced the joys and challenges of family life.
