Maintenance costs are also lower for e-Rickshaw compared to autos as they do not involve engine oil changes, tune-ups, or other such expenses. All they require is regular charging of batteries which has become easy with widespread availability of charging points. Any minor repair work can also be done at affordable costs by local mechanics trained in servicing these electric vehicles.

This ease of operation and lower maintenance needs make e-Rickshaw an accessible livelihood option even for individuals without formal training or technical skills. Many e-rickshaw drivers today are first-time vehicle owners, providing them a means of supplemental income.

Rising Popularity and Entrepreneurship
With their environmentally-friendly nature, affordability, and ease of use, e-Rickshaw have seen phenomenal growth in demand over the past few years across multiple cities. According to estimates, around 1.2 lakh e-Rickshaw were plying on Indian roads in 2021. This number is projected to double by 2025.

Alongside individual drivers, many local entrepreneurship initiatives focused around e-Rickshaw have emerged. Fleet operators deploy dozens or even hundreds of e-Rickshaw in major cities, employing drivers on a contractual basis. Some women's self-help groups have also taken up e-rickshaw driving or fleet ownership as an independent source of income generation. State governments too have launched subsidy schemes to promote large scale adoption of e-Rickshaw.

Opportunities and Challenges Ahead
With e-Rickshaw carving a niche in Indian cities' transportation landscape, immense opportunities exist for further growth. Their utility can be enhanced by introducing passenger-carrying upgrades like roofs and additional seats. Route optimization using technology can maximize fleet efficiency. Partnerships with food delivery and e-commerce firms allow leveraging existing fleets for last-mile delivery.

At the same time, integrating e-Rickshaw into urban transportation systems while promoting their sustainable use also necessitates addressing challenges. Road safety awareness needs enhancing for non-motorized vehicle drivers as well as others. Standardization of designs, fares and operations across cities and states is required. Ensuring adequate battery charging infrastructure and swapping facilities is crucial for maintaining fleet uptime. With a supportive policy push and stakeholder cooperation, e-Rickshaw could emerge as the backbone of sustainable mobility solutions in New India over the coming years.

E-Rickshaw have proven to be a feasible mobility solution that addresses the twin challenges of environmental protection and equitable access in Indian cities. With an effective ecosystem and enabling policy environment, their potential to transform urban transportation can be fully realized.
