It is so remarkable the task performed by a small piece of equipment, the medical flow meter. Although a lot of the medical equipment can be viewed as quite remarkable, machines with flashing lights and complex workings, some other pieces of equipment are in my view truly remarkable; namely the medical flow meter. The thing about the medical flow meter is that it is so simple, yet a patient is entrusting it with something as vital as their life. I was reminded of this the first time that I ever witnessed it when I went to visit my uncle in hospital recovery. The nurse was just in the process of turning it on and fiddling about with the little glass tube and the ball in the center so that it was at the correct measurement for my uncle to be given the precise quantity of oxygen that he required. When I questioned the nurse on what it was she told me that this medical flow meter was to provide my uncle with the right measurement of oxygen and this made me realize how truly reliable they are, as a slight discrepancy in the measurement could really be crucial.
What a medical flow meter actually is
The medical oxygen flow meter is a crucial part of most medical environments, where it is used to support breathing for patients recovering from surgery, those with breathing difficulties and even those in the process of resuscitation. Direct application of oxygen from a tank is often not effective as you can't always control whether or not enough or too much oxygen is being given to a patient and this can cause various physical problems for the lungs. The medical flow meter can ensure that just the right amount of oxygen that the patient needs is given. These medical flow meters can be seen everywhere in the hospital, in the operating theaters, emergency room and the intensive care ward. There is even a large number of medical flow meters in home environments where patients have breathing problems or may need longer-term treatment. They are small but powerful devices that play an invaluable role in saving the lives of patients worldwide.
Observing the device in action
While I was a patient in hospital I observed my nurse administering oxygen using the medical flow meter. With a slow and precise movement she adjusted the meter so that the desired reading, providing the correct level of oxygen for my breathing, was reached and once this had been done there were no beeping noises or flashing lights just the simple tool at work. I was somewhat surprised, after watching this demonstration, by how something so simple could perform such an important task. The same device, although perhaps slightly different in size or construction, I saw used again on the journey to hospital with another patient. It seems the meter is of utmost importance for the patient's journey and health on a range of situations.
Types of medical flow meter
Though most are very similar in design there is a range of different medical flow meters that may be used in hospitals today. While most will look somewhat similar, there are indeed a lot of differing types, from the simple medical oxygen flow meter that you will most often find, to digital medical flow meters, which have far more detailed readouts, to well-tested Thor tube flow meters. However despite the many variations they are all functioning in more or less the same way. Medical flow meters must be selected very carefully. The priorities that must be taken into consideration are simplicity, reliability and ease of use as, when the meter is used during an urgent medical situation, a user will have to understand how to correctly operate the meter.
The bigger view
By observing the medical flow meter in action it opened my eyes to the fact that hospitals do not only feature sophisticated and complex machines, however, as the smallest of objects can often have just as vital a role to play as the much larger ones. It has demonstrated to me that when it comes to some tasks, it is not the ability to carry them out with large, advanced machinery but the precision required to do so with a smaller device which is of paramount importance. Medical flow meters in their simple but vital capacity perfectly embody what it means to be at the forefront of hospital life without actually being noticed.
This is something that you may wish to bear in mind if you don't have a plan at the minute:
