India Data Centers Scale Up as AI, Cloud, and Digital Infrastructure Demand Accelerates

Hyperscale facilities account for an estimated 56% of the 2026 value, while hardware represents approximately 67% by component.
AI Creates New Computing Requirements
Artificial intelligence workloads require substantial processing capacity, particularly when training and operating large models across high-performance GPUs and specialised accelerators. These systems also generate more heat than many traditional enterprise servers, increasing requirements for cooling, power distribution, and high-density rack designs.
India’s expanding AI ecosystem is therefore closely connected with data-center investment. Recent infrastructure assessments indicate that rising AI adoption, hyperscale demand, and cloud expansion are expected to push national data-center capacity beyond 3 GW by 2028.
Hyperscale Facilities Lead Expansion
Hyperscale data centers are designed to support very large computing environments used by cloud providers, digital platforms, and technology companies. They differ from smaller facilities through their scale, automation, power requirements, and ability to expand computing capacity rapidly.
Their leading position within the supplied study reflects growing demand for cloud-based services and large-scale processing. As businesses move workloads away from traditional local infrastructure, hyperscale facilities can provide scalable computing resources without every organisation maintaining its own physical data center.
Hardware Remains the Core Investment Area
Servers, networking systems, storage equipment, cooling infrastructure, power distribution units, backup systems, and racks form the physical foundation of data-center operations. Hardware’s estimated 67% share in 2026 demonstrates the capital-intensive nature of building new computing capacity.
Operators must continuously balance processing performance with energy consumption and space efficiency. More powerful AI servers can increase computing density, making advanced cooling technologies and efficient electrical systems increasingly important when facilities are upgraded or newly constructed.
Capacity Expansion Reflects Digital Demand
India’s installed data-center capacity has expanded substantially as digital services become more deeply embedded across the economy. According to recent digital infrastructure developments, national capacity increased from about 375 MW in 2020 to around 1,500 MW by 2025.
Further capacity additions are being planned across established hubs and emerging locations. Mumbai remains a major centre, while Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, and other cities are attracting new investment because of connectivity, land availability, power infrastructure, and proximity to users.
Reliable Power Becomes a Strategic Priority
Data centers require continuous electricity for computing equipment, cooling systems, networking infrastructure, security systems, and backup technologies. Even short disruptions can affect digital services, making electricity availability and redundancy fundamental design considerations.
India is simultaneously expanding renewable generation and transmission capacity. The Ministry of Power continues to support grid development associated with the country’s non-fossil electricity targets. Greater renewable integration can help data-center operators pursue lower-carbon electricity strategies while maintaining reliability.
Edge Facilities Extend Computing Beyond Major Cities
Traditional data centers are concentrated largely in major metropolitan areas, but applications requiring low latency can benefit from smaller facilities located closer to users. 5G applications, gaming, content delivery, industrial IoT, and real-time digital services can all create demand for edge infrastructure.
Growth in mobile applications and 5G is already encouraging interest in Tier-II and Tier-III locations, while large metropolitan hubs continue to absorb significant capacity additions.
Security and Resilience Remain Essential
Data centers host sensitive enterprise information and critical digital services, making physical and cybersecurity important throughout facility operations. Operators need layered controls covering access management, surveillance, network protection, redundancy, monitoring, backup power, and disaster recovery.
India’s data-center policy framework also includes government guidance covering data-center infrastructure and security practices. Stronger operational standards become increasingly important as more essential services depend on highly available computing infrastructure.

India data centers are becoming increasingly connected with AI, cloud computing, digital services, 5G, and high-performance computing. Their role is moving beyond basic storage toward supporting the computing foundation of an increasingly data-intensive economy.
Future development will depend on reliable electricity, efficient cooling, renewable-energy integration, connectivity, land availability, cybersecurity, and skilled technical operations. As India’s digital economy continues scaling, data centers will remain a critical foundation for the country’s next generation of cloud and AI-driven services.
