IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Is Right for Your Study Abroad Plan?

IELTS vs PTE is the question Indian students ask most often before applying abroad, and the answer depends on more than personal taste. The right test is the one your university and visa office accept, so that should be your first check.

Beyond that, the two tests feel quite different. IELTS tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and the Speaking section is a live conversation with a trained examiner. PTE Academic is taken entirely on a computer, and you speak into a microphone instead of to a person.

Marking differs too. In IELTS, human examiners mark Writing and Speaking. In PTE, software marks all four skills. Neither approach is better for everyone. Software is consistent but looks for patterns, while a person can follow your ideas more flexibly.

The question styles also vary. IELTS includes longer tasks such as a graph description and an essay. PTE uses many short tasks, such as repeating sentences, describing images and re-ordering paragraphs, so you switch between tasks quickly.

Then there is the comparison of scores. The two tests use different scales, so you need a conversion chart to see how a result in one lines up with the other, and universities may use their own tables.

There is also a rule many students miss. Some countries require specific versions of each test, and booking the wrong one can be a costly mistake.

Our full guide compares the two tests side by side, with a score chart, country-wise advice for Australia, Canada, the UK, the USA and New Zealand, and the mistakes to avoid.
