Humana Healthy Horizons in Indiana Partners With HealthStream to Strengthen Home Care Workforce

Humana Healthy Horizons in Indiana, the Medicaid managed care entity of Humana Inc., announced a strategic collaboration with healthcare technology leader HealthStream to expand and stabilize Indiana's home care workforce. The partnership aims to improve home-based care accessibility for Hoosiers across the state, with a specific focus on under-resourced rural and urban communities where recruiting qualified home health professionals remains particularly challenging.

To eliminate financial barriers for aspiring healthcare workers, Humana is funding 1,000 Home Health Aide scholarships. The program will be delivered through HealthStream’s digital career platform, myCNAjobs.com, opening direct entry pathways into the home care field.

The home care industry continues to grapple with severe labor constraints, characterized by an estimated annual staff turnover rate of 77%. High turnover frequently disrupts care continuity for senior citizens and individuals relying on daily in-home assistance. However, structured training significantly improves workforce stability; trained home care aides are more than twice as likely to remain on the job after three months compared to uncertified peers.

Anna Dunn, Medicaid Plan President for Humana Healthy Horizons in Indiana, noted that expanding access to education represents one of the most effective strategies for stabilizing the caregiving pipeline. By removing upfront costs and providing accessible training, the program helps local providers build sustainable staffing models and resolve long-standing service gaps in underserved regions.

Data-Driven Engagement and Analytics Tools

The scholarship initiative builds upon a workforce stability framework originally developed in 2024 by MissionCare Collective, which HealthStream subsequently acquired in December 2025. Through this acquisition, participating Indiana providers gain access to a broader statewide caregiver network as well as sophisticated staff engagement technology.

A central component of the collaboration is the integration of HealthStream’s CoachUp Care™ platform. The tool utilizes predictive analytics and engagement metrics to identify care staff at risk of departure, allowing managers to intervene proactively with targeted retention strategies and ongoing professional development.

Long-Term Impact on Home-Based Healthcare

By uniting financial support, digital recruitment infrastructure, and predictive analytics, the joint initiative creates a cohesive pipeline for healthcare workforce development. Dunn emphasized that combining accessible career pathways with data-driven management tools creates a resilient home care ecosystem that directly benefits Hoosier families.

As state Medicaid programs place greater emphasis on community-based care models, scalable workforce solutions remain essential for maintaining service quality. Humana Healthy Horizons and HealthStream intend to leverage these initial workforce outcomes to maintain care continuity, reduce operational strain on home health agencies, and support aging in place across Indiana.
