Despite modern manufacturing technology, no tyre or wheel is perfectly balanced all around. Minor variations in weight around the assembly can cause it to rotate unevenly.

To correct this, a technician mounts the wheel on a balancing machine that spins it and identifies any heavy spots. Small counterweights are then attached to the rim to equalize the weight. 

There are generally two types of imbalance:

Static imbalance: Imbalance on a single plane, typically causing an up-and-down vibration.

Dynamic imbalance:  Imbalance across two planes, typically causing the vehicle to wobble or shimmy side-to-side at high speeds. If a wheel is unbalanced, vibrations or shaking are often felt through the steering wheel, seat, or floorboard, especially at higher speeds. If left uncorrected, it can also lead to uneven tyre wear patterns, such as 'cupping' or 'scalloping'.
