How to Keep Whole Spices Fresh for Longer

Proper storage is just as important as choosing fresh whole spices. Even a good batch of jeera, cloves, cardamom or black pepper can lose its aroma when exposed to heat, air and moisture.
Transfer the spices into clean, completely dry glass or steel containers with tight lids. Keep them inside a cool, dark cupboard away from the cooking stove, kitchen window and other warm areas. Always use a dry spoon and close the lid immediately after taking out the required quantity.
Write the opening month on each container. This makes it easier to identify older stock and use it first. Every few months, lightly crush and smell the spices. A clear, familiar fragrance indicates that they are still suitable for flavourful cooking. Avoid mixing a fresh batch with old spices because the weaker aroma of the older stock can affect the complete jar.
Buy pack sizes according to your household’s actual consumption. Smaller packs are often more practical for maintaining freshness.
