How to Enjoy Seasonal Coffee Drinks Without Overdoing the Sugar

Seasonal coffee drinks are part of the fun of autumn and winter. Pumpkin, pecan, peppermint and gingerbread arrive on the menu, and many of us look forward to them all year.

The catch is sugar. Seasonal drinks are built around sweet sauces, syrups and toppings, and a single cup can hold more sugar than you'd expect. The good news: you don't have to skip them. Small changes to how you order make a big difference.

How much sugar is in a seasonal drink?

Here are popular Starbucks seasonal drinks at the Grande (16 fl oz) size, using Starbucks' published nutrition:

For context, the American Heart Association suggests limiting added sugar to about 36 g a day for most men and 25 g for most women. Not all of the sugar in a milk-based drink is added, because milk has natural sugar too, but a large share comes from sauces and syrups.

A Grande Pumpkin Spice Latte's 50 g of sugar is about 12 teaspoons.

Five easy ways to lighten a seasonal drink

1. Order one size smaller. This is the simplest change and keeps the full flavour. A Pumpkin Spice Latte goes from 470 calories in a Venti to 390 in a Grande, 300 in a Tall and 210 in a Short. You can see every size of the Pumpkin Spice Latte side by side.

2. Ask for fewer pumps. Seasonal sauces are added by the pump: in a Pumpkin Spice Latte, that's 2 pumps in a Short, 3 in a Tall, 4 in a Grande and 5 in a Venti. Asking for half the pumps keeps the taste but cuts much of the added sugar.

3. Skip the whipped cream. Many seasonal drinks come topped with whipped cream by default. Saying "no whip" lowers calories and saturated fat without changing the drink underneath.

4. Choose a cold brew base. Cold-brew-based seasonal drinks put the flavour in the foam on top, not throughout the cup. That's why the Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew has about 140 fewer calories than a Pumpkin Spice Latte at the same size.

5. Make it an occasional treat. If a blended seasonal drink is your favourite, enjoy it as a dessert rather than your daily coffee. A Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino has as much sugar as about 16 teaspoons.

What about the holiday menu?

The same rules work for winter drinks such as peppermint and caramel holiday lattes. Look up the drink's calories and sugar before you order, pick the size on purpose, and adjust the pumps and toppings. Coffee chains usually publish nutrition on their own websites, and this page of seasonal Starbucks drinks ranks the current ones from lightest to heaviest.

The bottom line

Seasonal drinks don't have to blow your sugar budget. A smaller size, fewer pumps and no whipped cream can turn a 50 g sugar drink into something closer to half that, while it still tastes like the season.
