Creating a secure Telegram account in under three minutes is possible even if you do not speak English as your first language. First, you need to download the Telegram application from a trusted place. Many people make the mistake of searching for Telegram in a web browser and clicking on the first link they see. This can be dangerous because fake websites often look exactly like the real Telegram site. To stay safe, you should only download Telegram from the official Google Play Store if you use an Android phone, or from the official Apple App Store if you use an iPhone. If you are using a computer, go to the official Telegram website which is telegram.org. Do not use any other website. This is the most important step for security because fake apps can steal your phone number and messages. After you download and install the app, open it on your device. You will see a big button that says Start Messaging or a button that says Continue. Press that button to begin the process.
The next step is very simple and takes only a few seconds. Telegram will ask you to choose your country from a long list. You must scroll carefully and find your country name. If you cannot find your country, you can also type the first few letters of your country name in the search box. After selecting your country, Telegram will ask you to enter your mobile phone number. You must enter your real phone number because Telegram will send a confirmation code to that number. Do not use someone else's number and do not use a fake number. Type your number carefully. One wrong digit means you will not receive the code. After typing your number, press the next button which might say Continue, Next, or a checkmark symbol. Within a few seconds, Telegram will send you a text message with a five-digit login code. If you do not receive the code within thirty seconds, you can press the button that says Send Code Again. Sometimes the code goes to your spam messages folder, so check there as well. This code is like a key to your account, so never share this code with any other person, even if someone pretends to be Telegram customer support.
Once you receive the five-digit code, go back to the Telegram app and type the code in the empty boxes. After you enter the correct code, Telegram will ask you to write your name. This is where many people become confused because they think they must use their real full name. For security, you do not need to use your real name. You can use any name or even a nickname. For example, you can call yourself John or Maria or Sky or River. Using a fake name makes it harder for strangers to find your real identity. After you type your first name, Telegram may also ask for a last name. You can leave the last name empty or type a single letter. There is no rule that forces you to use your real last name. After typing your name, press the next button. Now your basic Telegram account is ready to use. However, a basic account is not yet a secure account. You have taken only two minutes so far. In the next minute, you will add the security settings that protect your messages from hackers and from people who should not see your private conversations.
The first security setting you must add is a two-step verification password. This is the most powerful protection for your Telegram account. Without two-step verification, anyone who steals your phone number and the login code can access your account. With two-step verification, even if someone steals your phone and your SIM card, they still cannot open your Telegram because they do not know your secret password. To enable this, go to the Settings menu inside Telegram. On most phones, the Settings icon looks like three horizontal lines in the top left corner or a gear symbol in the bottom right corner. Tap on Settings, then tap on Privacy and Security. Inside Privacy and Security, look for an option that says Two-Step Verification or Set Additional Password. Tap on that option. Telegram will ask you to create a strong password. A strong password should have at least eight letters and should include a mix of small letters, capital letters, and numbers. For example, a password like GreenTree99 is much better than a simple word like cat. Do not use your birth year or your phone number as a password because those are easy to guess. After typing your password, Telegram will ask you to type it again to confirm. Then Telegram will ask you to set a recovery email address. This email address is very important because if you forget your password, Telegram will send a reset link to that email. Use an email that you can access forever, such as a Gmail or Outlook address. Do not use a work email or a school email because you might lose access later.
The second security setting you must add is to hide your phone number from strangers. By default, Telegram shows your phone number to all your contacts and also to anyone who sends you a message. This is a privacy risk because bad people can see your number and call you or try to trick you. To change this, go back to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Phone Number. You will see three options: Everyone, My Contacts, and Nobody. You should select Nobody. This means no one can see your phone number, not even people in your contact list. If you want only your saved contacts to see your number, you can select My Contacts. But for the highest security, choose Nobody. After you make this change, people can still message you on Telegram, but they will only see your name and your profile picture. They will never see your phone number. This small change takes only ten seconds but protects you from many types of scams and harassment.
The third security setting is to control who can add you to group chats. Many people from non-English countries complain that strangers add them to large groups full of spam messages or fake offers. To stop this, go again to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Groups and Channels. You will see three options again: Everyone, My Contacts, and Nobody. If you select Everyone, any Telegram user can add you to any group without your permission. If you select My Contacts, only people saved in your phone book can add you. If you select Nobody, absolutely no one can add you to a group. The best choice for security is Nobody. If you choose Nobody, then when someone tries to add you to a group, you will receive a request message asking for your permission. You can then choose to accept or ignore. This stops all spam groups immediately. This setting takes only five seconds to change but saves you hours of frustration later.

The fourth security setting is to enable the option that locks your Telegram app with a separate passcode. Even if someone borrows your phone while it is unlocked, they cannot open your Telegram without this extra passcode. To set this up, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Passcode Lock. Turn on the option that says Lock with Passcode. Telegram will ask you to create a four-digit or six-digit number. Do not use easy numbers like 1111 or 1234 or your birth year. Choose a number that only you know. After creating the passcode, you can also choose to unlock your Telegram using your phone's fingerprint or face scan if your phone supports that feature. Then you should also turn on the option that says Auto-Lock. Set it to one minute. This means if you leave your Telegram app and do not touch it for one minute, it will automatically lock itself. When you come back, you must enter your passcode or use your fingerprint again. This is very useful if you lose your phone or if someone takes it while you are not looking.
The fifth security setting is to delete all old login sessions from other devices. Telegram allows you to use the same account on your phone, your computer, your tablet, and even a web browser. Sometimes people log into Telegram on a friend's phone or on a public computer and then forget to log out. Those old sessions remain active and someone else could open Telegram on that device and read your messages. To check for old sessions, go to Settings, then Devices or Active Sessions. You will see a list of all phones, computers, and browsers that are currently logged into your Telegram account. For each device, you will see the name of the device, the location, and the last time it was active. If you see any device that you do not recognize, or if you see a device that you used a long time ago and no longer have, tap on that device and then tap Terminate or End Session. This instantly logs that device out of your Telegram. You should do this check once every month to keep your account clean and secure. Even if you have only one phone, sometimes old web sessions remain open. Terminating them takes only a few seconds but removes hidden access points that hackers could use.
The sixth security setting is to turn off the profile picture visibility for people who are not in your contacts. By default, anyone on Telegram can see your profile picture even if they do not know your phone number. This is not dangerous by itself, but it gives strangers a small piece of information about you. To change this, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then tap on Profile Photo. You will see the same options: Everyone, My Contacts, and Nobody. If you want maximum privacy, select My Contacts. This means only people you have saved in your phone book can see your profile picture. Everyone else will see a blank silhouette instead of your face. If you select Nobody, even your contacts cannot see your photo, which might confuse your friends. So the balanced choice is My Contacts. This way, your friends and family can recognize you, but strangers cannot see what you look like.
The seventh security setting is to enable secret chats for your most important conversations. Normal Telegram messages are encrypted between you and Telegram's servers, but secret chats are encrypted from your phone directly to the other person's phone with no server in between. Secret chats also have a self-destruct timer, meaning messages disappear after a set amount of time. To start a secret chat, open a conversation with the person you trust, tap on their name at the top of the screen, then tap on More or the three dots, then tap Start Secret Chat. Telegram will warn you that secret chats are only available on the same device and do not sync to your other devices. Confirm and start the chat. In a secret chat, you can set a timer for how long each message stays visible. For example, you can set the timer to five seconds. After the other person reads your message, it disappears from both phones after five seconds. No one can take a screenshot in a secret chat because Telegram will notify you if the other person tries. Use secret chats only for very private information like passwords, bank details, or personal photos. For everyday talking with friends, normal chats are fine.
The eighth security setting is to never click on links sent by strangers inside Telegram. Many bad people send messages saying you won a prize or that your account will be closed unless you click a link. These links lead to fake websites that steal your login information. Telegram has a built-in warning when you click a suspicious link, but you should still be careful. If you receive a message from a number you do not recognize, do not reply and do not click any link. Instead, block the user by tapping on their name, then tapping Block or Report. If the message claims to be from Telegram support, remember that Telegram support never sends direct messages to users. Any message claiming to be from Telegram support is always a scam. Also, never send your two-step verification password to anyone, not even to a friend. Real Telegram employees will never ask for your password. If someone asks for your code or password, block them immediately and delete the conversation.
The ninth security setting is to regularly update your Telegram app. Every few weeks, Telegram releases new versions that fix security problems. If you do not update your app, hackers can use old security holes to attack your account. On Android, open the Google Play Store, tap on your profile picture, tap Manage Apps and Device, then tap Update All. On iPhone, open the App Store, tap on your profile picture, then scroll down to see available updates. Make sure Telegram is on the list and tap Update next to it. If you turn on automatic updates in your phone settings, you never have to remember to do this manually. Automatic updates are the easiest way to stay protected. To turn on automatic updates on Android, go to Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, tap Settings, then tap Auto-update apps, and choose Over any network or Wi-Fi only. On iPhone, go to Settings, tap App Store, then turn on App Updates under Automatic Downloads.
The tenth and final security setting is to understand that three minutes is enough to create the account but security is an ongoing practice. After you finish the steps above, your Telegram account is much safer than most people's accounts. However, you must also be careful about what you share in messages. Do not send your credit card number, your national ID number, or your home address through Telegram unless you are using a secret chat with someone you trust completely. Even with security settings, no system is 100 percent perfect. The safest habit is to treat every message as if it could be seen by someone else. Also, if you ever lose your phone, you should immediately contact your mobile network provider to block your SIM card. Then use a friend's phone or a computer to log into Telegram. When you log in from a new device, Telegram will send a code to your old phone number, which will not work because the SIM is blocked. In that case, you will need to wait for Telegram support to help you, which can take several days. To avoid this problem, you can also add an email address to your account for recovery purposes. Go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Two-Step Verification, and make sure your recovery email is correct and up to date.
Every non-English country person can follow these simple steps without needing to speak perfect English. The words used in Telegram settings like Privacy, Security, Passcode, and Two-Step Verification are shown with small icons that help you understand their meaning. If you do not understand a word, you can use Google Translate by taking a screenshot of the screen and translating it. Many phones also allow you to change the Telegram app language to your own language. To change the language, go to Settings, then Language, and choose your country's language from the list. Telegram supports dozens of languages including Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Russian, Spanish, French, German, Turkish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, and many more. Using your own language makes all the security settings easier to understand. Remember that creating a secure account is faster than cleaning up problems after a hacker attacks. Three minutes of careful setup saves you from months of stress and lost messages. Start now by downloading the official Telegram app, and in less time than it takes to drink a cup of tea, your secure account will be ready for safe conversations with family, friends, and colleagues around the world. Do not wait until something bad happens. Take these three minutes today, and you will have peace of mind every time you open Telegram.
