How Kundli Prediction Works: Mahadasha, Antardasha and Transits Made Simple

Ask anyone who has had a meaningful astrology reading what stood out, and they'll usually mention timing: "The astrologer said this phase would ease after a certain year, and it did." That timing doesn't come from guesswork. It comes from two systems at the heart of Vedic kundli astrology: Dashas and transits.
Here's a simple kundli explanation of how they work.
Part 1: The Dasha system
Vimshottari Dasha: a 120-year cycle
The most widely used timing system is Vimshottari Dasha. It divides a 120-year life cycle into nine planetary periods of fixed length:
| Planet | Mahadasha length |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 years |
| Venus | 20 years |
| Sun | 6 years |
| Moon | 10 years |
| Mars | 7 years |
| Rahu | 18 years |
| Jupiter | 16 years |
| Saturn | 19 years |
| Mercury | 17 years |
Your starting Dasha depends on the nakshatra (lunar mansion) the Moon occupied at birth, and how far the Moon had travelled through it. That's one reason accurate birth time matters.
Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha
Each Mahadasha (major period) is divided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods), following the same sequence. Each Antardasha divides further into Pratyantardashas. So at any moment, you're running a combination such as Saturn–Mercury–Venus.
How a Dasha is interpreted
A Dasha planet doesn't act in the abstract. It delivers results based on:
- The houses it rules in your chart
- The house it occupies
- Its strength (sign, dignity, aspects, divisional charts)
- Its relationship with the Antardasha lord
For example, a Saturn Mahadasha could bring career consolidation for one person and hard lessons in discipline for another. Same planet, different charts.
Part 2: Transits (Gochar)
While Dashas show which themes are active, transits show what the sky is doing right now relative to your birth chart.
The slow planets matter most:
- Saturn stays about 2.5 years in each sign. Its transit over the natal Moon and the signs on either side is the well-known Sade Sati, a roughly 7.5-year phase associated with responsibility, maturity and restructuring.
- Jupiter spends about a year per sign and is associated with growth, learning and opportunity where it transits.
- Rahu and Ketu move backwards through the zodiac, spending about 18 months per sign, often linked to shifts in focus and unexpected developments.
Part 3: Putting them together
Reliable kundli prediction rarely relies on one technique. Astrologers often look for agreement:
- The natal chart promises a theme (e.g., a strong 10th house for career growth).
- The Dasha activates that theme (e.g., the 10th lord's Antardasha begins).
- Transits trigger it (e.g., Jupiter transits the 10th house or aspects the 10th lord).
When all three line up, the timing indication is considered stronger. When they don't, the astrologer will usually talk about tendencies rather than events.
Why deep analysis beats quick predictions
Apps can print your Dasha table in seconds, but they can't judge which periods matter for your question, or how conflicting indications balance out. A deep kundli analysis studies the birth chart, divisional charts, Mahadasha, Antardasha and transits together, and relates them to your real situation: career moves, relationships, or a decision you're weighing right now.
A healthy approach to timing
- Use timing to prepare, not to wait passively.
- Be cautious of anyone predicting disasters or guaranteeing outcomes.
- Treat astrology as a perspective alongside professional medical, legal or financial advice, never a replacement for it.
Understanding your Dasha and transits won't decide your life for you, but it can help you see which season you're in and plan with a little more clarity.
