How CNC Machining Supports Automotive OEMs’ Unique Production Needs

While it’s no secret that CNC technology has revolutionized manufacturing across the industrial spectrum, it has brought many unique benefits to automotive OEMs that help them deliver new vehicle products to market faster, manage more model variations, and achieve tighter tolerances to keep up with evolving consumer demands.

In this month’s Kenona Industries/Arrow Automotive blog, we examine how CNC machining helps support automakers’ manufacturing requirements and pushes them further toward reaching their production goals.

Why Advanced CNC Technology Has Replaced Traditional Machining in Auto Manufacturing

Auto manufacturing has been around for over 100 years, and traditional automotive parts and components manufacturing processes have served the industry well for most of that time.

Although conventional processes have always been capable of producing accurate components, we can no longer rely strictly on them to produce modern equipment with tighter delivery schedules. That’s because traditional machining processes depend heavily on manual machine adjustments, dedicated setups, and human operator intervention that increase production time when production requirements change.

CNC machining solves this issue by allowing machining operations to be controlled through programmed digital instructions. For example, rather than manually positioning a cutting tool for each operation, the machine follows a programmed toolpath based on the component’s design and specific manufacturing requirements, saving time and cutting manufacturing costs.

Here are four critical ways that CNC machining supports complex automotive component manufacturing:

Enables Precision Machining Of Complex Designs

Automotive components have never been more complex, with multiple features, angled surfaces, and tight dimensional requirements that can be difficult to produce efficiently using basic three-axis machining.

Here at Arrow Automotive, we utilize multi-axis CNC machining that moves the cutting tool and/or workpiece along additional rotational axes. For example, five-axis machining can position the cutting tool at different angles relative to the workpiece, allowing multiple surfaces and complex features to be machined in fewer steps.

Multi-axis machining can also provide better tool access to machine complex shapes. By changing the orientation of the cutting tool, manufacturers can approach surfaces more effectively and maintain more consistent cutting conditions, improving surface quality while reducing unnecessary machining operations.

Automated Tool Changes

CNC automatic tool changers allow multiple cutting tools to be used within the same machining cycle, eliminating the need for an operator to manually change tools between processes. The technology automatically selects the required tool from a carousel or rack and continues the programmed cycle, allowing a single machine to perform multiple operations such as drilling, facing, pocketing and slotting, without repeated interruptions.

Automatic tool changers also support greater consistency and more efficient use of labor. Because machines can complete complex sequences with less operator intervention, personnel can spend more time overseeing multiple machines or production activities rather than waiting for individual tool changes.

Consistent Manufacturing Quality

Digital manufacturing data driven by CNC technology contributes to repeatability. Once a machining program has been developed, verified and documented, it can be recalled for subsequent production rather than recreated manually.

Engineering changes can then be incorporated into the digital manufacturing process and controlled through appropriate revision procedures, avoiding time-consuming manual revisions and reducing material waste.

Supports Pre-Production Innovation

CNC machining is also valuable because it can bridge the gap between product development and production. Auto design engineers often need functional prototypes to evaluate fit, performance, assembly and manufacturability. The problem is that prototype quantities are often too small to justify dedicated production tooling, while the components still need to accurately represent the intended result.

Advanced digital CAD models solve this issue with machining programing that allows prototype components to be manufactured without investing in specialized hard tooling. Design revisions can then be incorporated into subsequent machining programs as development progresses.
