Golf carts look simple, but they're powered by a bunch of electrical parts working together. When your cart turns over slowly, won't charge, or just clicks and won’t start, something in that electrical setup has gone wrong. In this guide, you'll find out what each part does, how to spot problems, and what to check before you shell out cash for a replacement.

What Do These Parts Actually Do?

Starter generator – Cranks the engine to start it, then switches to charging mode to keep the battery topped up while driving.

Voltage regulator – A starter generator can produce 18-20 volts, far more than a battery can safely handle. The regulator brings that down to a safe charging range, typically 13.5-15.5 volts.

Solenoid – Acts as a heavy-duty switch, sending full power to the starter or motor when the pedal is pressed.

Accelerator pedal switch – Signals the electrical system when the pedal is pressed, so the cart responds correctly.

Common warning signs include slow cranking, clicking with no start, a battery that won't hold a charge, or inconsistent power while driving. Since these symptoms can overlap, it's worth checking the battery, cables, and connections before replacing a part.

Fit matters more here than on most golf cart parts. Club Car, EZ-GO, and Yamaha carts each use different regulators, solenoids, and starter generators depending on model and year, so matching the correct OEM part number is essential.
