Game Design and Development: What It Is and How to Get Started

Author : Mages Institute | Published On : 07 Nov 2026

Game Design and Development is the process of planning, building and refining a video game. Game design decides what players do and why it is fun: rules, goals, levels and progression. Game development turns those ideas into a working game through programming, engines and testing. This guide explains how the two fit together, the skills involved, how to start learning and how the game design diploma at MAGES Institute of Excellence in Singapore approaches it.

Game Design vs Game Development

Game design

Game development

Focus

Player experience, rules and balance

Making the game run

Typical work

Mechanics, levels, design documents, playtesting

Gameplay code, engine work, debugging, optimisation

Key tools

Paper prototypes, spreadsheets, game engines

Game engines, programming languages, version control

In small teams one person often does both, and designers who can prototype in an engine are valued.

How a Game Is Made: The Development Process

  1. Concept: define the core idea, audience and the main thing players do.

  2. Prototype: build a rough playable version to test whether the idea is fun.

  3. Production: create levels, systems, art and audio as a team.

  4. Testing and balancing: playtest, fix bugs and tune difficulty.

  5. Release and updates: publish, gather feedback and improve.

Key Skills for Designers and Developers

  • Design thinking: mechanics, player motivation, level flow and balance.

  • Programming: scripting gameplay logic, often in C# or C++.

  • Engine skills: working in Unity or Unreal Engine to build and test.

  • Iteration: playtesting, reading feedback and improving quickly.

  • Teamwork: version control, task tracking and clear communication.

Studios often weigh shipped projects above certificates. See what Singapore studios look for in game designers.

How to Start Learning

Start small. Finish simple games rather than one large unfinished project, join game jams to practise working to deadlines, and learn one engine properly. A structured course adds feedback, team projects and a portfolio of finished, playable games, which is usually what employers ask to see.

Careers in Game Design and Development

Common entry-level paths include Game Designer, Gameplay Programmer, Technical Designer, Level Designer and Junior Game Developer, in studios, indie teams and simulation companies. Hiring depends on your portfolio, skills and the employer's needs, so no course guarantees a role. Explore more in top careers in game development.

Studying Game Design and Development at MAGES Institute of Excellence

MAGES offers the Diploma in Game Design & Technology, a 12-month, full-time programme in Singapore. According to the programme page:

  • Term 1 moves from board game mechanics to interactive stories and a platformer prototype; Term 2 covers game systems and mobile development; Term 3 is a studio-style production project.

  • Students work in Unity with C#, Visual Studio, Git and ClickUp, mostly in teams.

  • Students can finish with up to seven complete games, with student games published on itch.io.

  • Mentors include game design leader Herman Ahmad, whose credits include Assassin's Creed Origins and Valhalla.

  • No prior coding or art experience is required, and entry starts at age 16.

The programme page also lists a route to the BSc Computer Game Applications Development with Abertay University, subject to entry requirements. The next published intake is 15 February 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions About Game Design and Development

What is game design and development?

Game design and development is the process of creating a video game. Design defines the rules, goals, levels and player experience, while development builds the working game using engines such as Unity or Unreal, programming and testing.

Do I need to know coding to study game design?

Not always. Many beginner programmes start from zero and teach scripting alongside design. Basic coding helps designers prototype ideas themselves, so expect to learn some programming even if your goal is a design role.

Which game engine should beginners learn first?

Unity and Unreal Engine are the most common choices. Unity is widely used for mobile and indie games and uses C#, while Unreal is common in high-end console and PC titles. Pick one and finish small projects before switching.

How long does it take to learn game design and development?

You can build simple games within weeks, but becoming job-ready usually takes a year or more of focused practice. A full-time diploma condenses this into a structured timeline with team projects and regular feedback.
