If you're building a campervan, roof space is never quite as generous as it looks from the ground. Vents, fans, roof racks, skylights, and curved sections all compete for the same few square feet.
That is where flexible solar panels for van roof installations start to make sense.
Unlike conventional rigid modules, flexible panels are thin and can follow gentle roof curves. They can also create a much lower-profile installation, which is appealing when you want to keep the van's original shape rather than add a large framed structure above it. But there is more to choosing them than simply looking for the highest wattage.
Why Flexible Panels Work Well on Vans
A campervan roof is a little different from a house roof.
You may have only a narrow strip of usable space beside a roof fan. Maybe the roof curves toward the sides. Or perhaps you don't want a rigid aluminum frame sitting above everything else.
Flexible solar panels can deal with these situations more easily.
Their low weight is another practical advantage, particularly for compact van conversions where every added component needs to earn its place. And because they sit close to the roof, the finished installation can look much less bulky.
There is a trade-off, though.
Flexible panels generally give up some advantages of rigid panels. Rigid modules have a structure that allows airflow underneath, which can help with cooling and long-term durability. Victron's current RV guidance notes that rigid panels generally provide better airflow and longer service life than flexible panels.
So the question isn't simply, “Are flexible panels better?”
It's whether they fit your van better.
Measure the Roof Before Buying Anything
This sounds obvious. It is also one of the easiest things to skip.
Put a tape measure on the roof and mark the actual usable area. Account for the roof fan, vents, antenna, skylights, rails, and any other hardware already installed.
Then look at shadows.
A roof fan can cast a surprisingly long shadow during part of the day. Parking under trees creates another problem. If your daily travel involves wooded campsites, partial shading should be part of the panel-selection conversation rather than an afterthought.
Draw the layout on paper—or even use cardboard cut to the approximate panel dimensions.
It is much easier to move cardboard around than a bonded solar panel.
Mounting Is More Important Than It Looks
One common assumption is that flexible means “just glue it down.”
Not necessarily.
The correct mounting method depends on the panel, roof material, climate, and manufacturer's installation requirements. Recent installation guidance specifically warns that unsuitable adhesives, poor surface preparation, and inadequate cable protection can cause adhesion problems or roof damage.
There is another detail that deserves attention: heat.
Solar panels get hot in direct sunlight. When a flexible panel is bonded directly to an insulating roof surface, heat dissipation can become more difficult. Some installation approaches therefore create a small air space beneath the panel rather than completely sealing it against the roof.
Don't copy another van's installation blindly. The same mounting method may not be appropriate for a different roof material.
Don't Forget the Electrical Side
The panel is only the beginning.
A typical van solar system includes the panels, solar charge controller, battery bank, protective devices, wiring, and the loads you're trying to power. The controller needs to match the electrical characteristics of the array and battery system.
Before wiring anything, check the panel's:
- Voc — open-circuit voltage
- Vmp — voltage at maximum power
- Isc — short-circuit current
- Imp — current at maximum power
Then compare those figures with the controller's limits.
This becomes especially important when multiple panels are connected. Series wiring increases array voltage, while parallel wiring increases current. Cable length, voltage drop, controller limits, and battery voltage all have a say in which configuration makes sense.
A bigger number on the roof doesn't automatically mean a better solar system.
Flexible vs. Rigid: Look at the Whole Build
For a flat roof with plenty of room, rigid panels may be a straightforward choice.
For a curved van roof, a stealthy conversion, or a build where minimizing roof height matters, flexible panels can be much easier to integrate.
Cost matters too. Recent solar-system guidance notes that flexible panels typically cost more per watt than rigid modules, while their main advantages are their low profile, lighter construction, and ability to work with curved surfaces.
So don't compare panels on price alone.
Compare the complete installation.
Will you need a roof rack? Brackets? Additional hardware? More complex mounting? How much usable roof area do you actually have?
Those answers can change the calculation quickly.
A Better Van Starts With a Better Roof Plan
The best flexible solar panels for van roof projects aren't chosen simply because they're thin or bendable.
They work because the panel dimensions, roof layout, mounting method, wiring, charge controller, battery, and daily energy use have been considered together.
For a weekend van, the electrical demand may be modest. For someone running a refrigerator, lights, ventilation, computers, and other equipment while staying away from hookups, the system needs a very different design.
