Flange couplings are one of the most widely used rigid coupling systems in mechanical and industrial engineering. They are primarily designed to connect two rotating shafts in order to transmit torque and rotational motion efficiently. These couplings are commonly used in heavy-duty machinery, piping systems, pumps, and compressors where a strong and stable connection is required.

A flange coupling consists of two separate flanged ends, each mounted on the shaft. These flanges are joined together using bolts and nuts arranged in a circular pattern. Once tightly fastened, the system ensures perfect alignment between the shafts, allowing smooth and uninterrupted power transmission. Working of Flange Couplings

The working principle of a flange coupling is simple yet highly effective. Each shaft is fitted with a flange, typically keyed to prevent slipping. When both flanges are aligned face-to-face, bolts are inserted through pre-drilled holes and tightened securely.

This bolted connection allows torque to pass directly from one shaft to another without any significant energy loss. Because of its rigid structure, flange couplings maintain concentric alignment and reduce vibration during operation.

1. Unprotected Flange Coupling

2. Protected Flange Coupling

In protected flange couplings, the bolt heads and nuts are covered by flanges to improve safety. This prevents accidental contact with moving parts, making it safer for industrial environments.

3. Marine Flange Coupling

Marine flange couplings are used in heavy-duty applications such as ships and marine machinery. In this type, flanges are integrated with shafts and connected using long bolts for high strength and durability.

Applications of Flange Couplings

Flange couplings are widely used in:
