Fine Motor Skills Activities That Improve Writing Ability

"Fine motor skills" covers more ground than strong fingers. Several distinct abilities work together every time a child picks up a pencil: finger strength for holding the tool without tiring, finger dexterity for small controlled movements, finger isolation for moving one or two fingers without the whole hand joining in, wrist stability to give those finger movements something steady to work from, bilateral coordination so one hand can write while the other steadies the paper, hand-eye coordination to guide the pencil toward where it needs to go, and in-hand manipulation for small adjustments like repositioning the pencil without putting it down. Fine motor skills development touches all of these, not just one.
