Another major modification is that the entire building has been provided with a completely new outer shell. The outer shell was completely removed and clad with insulation and - because of the load-bearing capacity - stone strips. This also had consequences for the roof edge finishing, where the architect opted for aluminium wall copings. Aluminium wall copings turned out to be the perfect solution to cover the width of the insulation and the stone strips which end near the roof.

As both communities are seeing more and more new residential projects, a good connection has become essential. The local authorities held a competition amongst architects and designers throughout the country, which Syb van Breda & Co managed to win. “They wanted something visible – a design that could be admired by pedestrians and cyclists from all sides of the water,” reveals van Breda. Syb van Breda & Co is a small, devoted agency with architects coming from various backgrounds, but they all love the challenge of constantly working towards something that is innovative as well as aesthetically satisfying. The fluent and continious design of the exterior and the interior is inspired on the unbounded limits of the internet and the awareness of being a small part of this complex system. Flexible office floor are wrapped around the collective spaces, generating maximum interaction between the different companies. The housing volumes are designed as V-shaped blocks that profit from the sun orientation and the view towards the historic centre of Breda. The selection committee appreciates the connection of the design with the urban concept of the municipality and praises the way in which the park, the in-between zones and the central interior spaces are activated by the attractive public program. With the completion of 5TRACKS, Breda gained a new mixed-use district right next to Central Station, commissioned by Synchroon and J.P. Van Eesteren and designed by Shift architecture urbanism and Powerhouse Company. 5TRACKS embodies contemporary urban living while strengthening Breda’s international standing.
