Evaluating Chronic Cough Beyond the Lungs

When the Chronic Cough condition extends beyond eight weeks in duration, conventional medical treatment for the disease might fail since the cause of the problem might come from an external factor rather than the lungs themselves. One possible cause that is becoming increasingly well-known in clinical medicine is reflux or gastroesophageal dysfunction.

Here at Harmony, we use a multi-disciplinary approach to treating Chronic Cough to consider the role of reflux as a possible etiology when combined with associated signs and symptoms such as coughing following meals, hoarseness, and throat irritation in addition to chronic cough. The presence of reflux does not have to be associated with heartburn or pain in order for it to be considered relevant; it is possible for reflux to irritate the top airway without causing any obvious burning sensations, and this can trigger coughing.

Assessment of Chronic Cough at Harmony includes history taking and pattern recognition and can involve the use of diagnostic tools if warranted such as pH testing or impedance studies that look for a correlation between reflux and coughing events.

Management can involve both lifestyle changes and effective anti-reflux therapy.
