Easy Coconut Modak Flavour Variations

A basic Ganesh Chaturthi modak recipe can be transformed into several flavours without adding complicated cooking steps. Begin with desiccated coconut, condensed milk, milk powder and cardamom as the common base.
For rose coconut modak, mix in half a teaspoon of rose water and a small amount of natural pink colour. For a chocolate version, combine one tablespoon of cocoa powder with the dry ingredients before adding condensed milk.
You can also prepare a jaggery variation by replacing part of the condensed milk with soft jaggery paste. Since jaggery can change the moisture level, add it gradually and adjust the consistency with extra desiccated coconut if required.
Avoid adding too much liquid flavouring because it can make the mixture sticky. Desiccated coconut gives more consistent results than fresh coconut, which contains additional moisture.
Shape the mixture in a greased mould or form small cones with your hands. Chill the modaks before serving and keep the remaining batch refrigerated in an airtight container.
