What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. The median nerve provides sensation to parts of the hand and also controls some of the muscles involved in hand movement.
When pressure builds around this nerve, symptoms can develop in the hand and wrist. The severity can vary from occasional tingling to persistent numbness, discomfort and reduced hand function.
