Do You Really Have to Remove an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

Many people assume the answer is yes. The tooth is stuck, so it must come out.

The real answer is: not always.

If an impacted wisdom tooth is healthy and causing no trouble, a dentist may simply keep an eye on it. That usually means regular check-ups, and X-rays when they are needed. The X-rays help show how the tooth is positioned and whether anything is hiding out of view.

So watching and waiting is a real option. But it is not the same as ignoring the tooth. Checking in is the whole point.

There is also something people rarely hear about. In uncommon cases, a cyst can form around an impacted tooth. It may not cause symptoms early on. This is one reason dentists like to monitor these teeth instead of forgetting about them.

Some situations do tip the decision toward removal. They are fairly specific, and knowing them can make a dentist visit less stressful.
